Not yet. The first time I tried out 4WD my front diff started overheating but I caught it before anything broke. Thanks to manual hubs, I just unlocked them and was able to drive home without destroying the differential. Then my mom died unexpectedly a few weeks ago so my siblings and I are still wrapping up odds and ends from that. And of course my work has been busy as fuck, so my Taco has been parked for almost a month now. I’m planning on pulling out my front diff this weekend and rebuilding it.

Damn! Sorry to hear about your mom. My deepest sympathies.

We’ll save the truck talk for later.

    Hang in there brutha!

Thank you, Ryan. No worries, I’m ready for more truck talk and longing to get my Taco drivable again. I ordered skid plates a while ago, I hope they arrive before winter.

Cool little truck! I was just checking out the Duro Bumps. How do you like them?

Hey @sonoran, I don't know how I missed this. The Duro Bumps are awesome. They made a noticeable difference, especially on the freeway.

Why did you go back to steel wheels? I have always loved your white 4Runner rims.

I didn’t clear coat them and should have. After a year or so they got discolored and ugly. Eventually I’ll refinish them but do a better job.

Thanks, @PennSilverTaco, I like yours too. I follow pretty much all of the regular cab threads.

It seems like most 2nd Gen RCs around here are shitboxes, and I’ve got the only decent one in Bucks County!

I like the 4-Runner wheels, but honestly I like those steelies better

Yeah, now that Whitey's not my daily anymore and I care less about fuel economy, I really like the steelies. They're getting kinda beat up now and I've found that beat up steelies look a lot cooler than beat up aluminum wheels.

Thank you, yours is quite excellent as well. I tried to take one home just like it, way back in 2011. I was shopping for my first Tacoma and one of the Toyota dealerships in town had two used ones, both 1st gen white TRD 4X4 3.4L 5 speed extra cabs with under 100,000 miles. I thought everyone in Utah prefers giant bro trucks, I'll just stop in after work and buy one of those Tacos. I get there after work and they're both gone. It didn't even occur to me to place a deposit. That's what it took for me to realize a 1st gen Tacoma was no ordinary 10 year old used vehicle.

    Thanks, man!

I find your comment about the bro trucks I. Utah to be pretty darn accurate. Growing up there and even now going back to visit family, it certainly seems like it isn’t changing anytime soon. It just kinda makes me chuckle because those trucks would have a really tough time out here on the narrow shelf roads and super tight forest trails. What’s so appealing about Tacos and yours in particular is that they perform really well in all sorts of terrain and they still look damn sexy!

If I wasn’t so tied to the interior storage I would have been all over a regular cab. Between the look and the shorter wheelbase, they’re definitely my favorite model. Just out of curiosity, how tall are you and how is the leg and headroom in your RC?

For me, regular cabs have a fun factor that other trucks don't and they just look awesome. Every time I jump in I'm so stoked to drive it. I'm 5'11" and the head and leg room are fine. In fact, if the seat is all the way back I can't push the clutch fully in, so I have it a click or two forward. I swear the floor to ceiling height is better in the 1st gen cab than in the 2nd/3rd gen cab. I used to have a 2nd gen and even with the notoriously low seating position I was always whacking my head getting in and out. I also had to uncomfortably recline the seatback to keep my head from touching the ceiling. In my 1st gen the seating position is more upright like a normal chair yet my head still doesn't touch the ceiling. It works great for me because I'm more comfortable sitting upright than reclined.

Storage is not an issue because my wife does not do camping. If there's even a remote chance of having to shit in a bucket, she's out. For myself and a medium-sized dog, a regular cab is perfect. There's also a lot more storage than you'd think. It's an optical illusion because regular cabs look so small from the outside. Most of the stuff people mount to the exterior of their 4Runners or double cab Tacos, easily fits behind the seat of my regular cab. It's no way to show off your broverland bling but it works.
