So the great news is that I just bought a 15DCSB from a TW member in FL. The deal is done and now I need to go to Jacksonville to pick it up and drive it back to NorCal.

In FL the owner keeps their plates after a vehicle is sold. But I can't register the truck in CA until I get it smogged and they inspect it in person. So my question is does the CA DMV issue temp registration/ temp plates to transfer an out of state vehicle into CA?

I've searched on the CA DMV website and haven't found what I'm looking for and I will do anything to avoid going to the DMV in person. I'm sure this has been done many times around these parts. Thanks for your input.

I've done that. Driven half across the country with no plates and haven't been stopped once.
Actually got stopped in San Diego on my way to the DMV lol. Copper let me go after seeing the Bill of Sale.

You're gonna have to get it weighed, possibly smogged and then register it in CA and the DMV will mail you a CA title.

There are temporary transportation tags you can get. You might have to go to the DMV to get them tho.

Here in NM you can register online and instantly get an email with temporary tags in .pdf format. I'm not sure if CA has that with their strict smog regulations but you could try.

Dunno about Florida, but I've bought cars from Oregon that had no plates. I just had to go in to the Oregon DMV and show the title and proof of insurance and they gave me a temp registration tag/moving permit to put in the back window that was good for ~30 days. Cali honors it.

Calling the Florida DMV is probably your best bet as that's where your cross-country adventure begins.

Having done some math and considering the logistics, it is going to be way more cost effective for me to ship this rig.

Go to the DMV or a title shop and ask for a Moving Permit. I got one I used to drive my Civic to the SMOG station with out of date tags.

10 days to register once back in Cali. Pay fees and get a moving permit to allow more time to smog. Be sure to ask for an allotted time frame, otherwise they’ll give you a one day mover. Have bill of sale or proof of purchase with vehicle at all times.

I think they are only good for 1 day now. And all reg fees have to have been paid before they issue it. So it might not work for his purpose, but there might be another proccess that can be used.

    Edit.
Looks like a vehicle reg permit would work.

I talked to someone on the DMV phone line yesterday. He basically told me "there's nothing we can offer you to drive it across the country." He said I should either try to get temp tags from FL DMV (I looked into that too, no-go) and once I started adding up flight, gas, meals, accommodations, time off work etc. it was way cheaper for me to ship it, so that's the path I'm going.

edit: the DMV employee told me you used to be able to get away with a moving permit but as of 2019 even new cars that come off a lot in CA needs to have paper tags with a license plate number printed on them, no more generic "dealer tags" with juts the dealer's name or logo on them.

The guy at the title shop said “I’ll leave it blank and if you get pulled over just say you forgot to fill in the date”

Interesting, the Wife and I just talked about this today. Every new car has paper plates with the #s on them and we figured it must have been a new law.

Starting January 1st, 2019 temporary paper tags are required on all used and new vehicles.

Can you just drive it back with the FL tags and then mail them back to the seller once you get home?

That explains why I’ve been seeing these paper plates everywhere. Was wondering what was up with that.

Why? There's always a workaround. I'm flying to Ohio to buy a Taco and drive it back to Calif in April. Sometimes the best shit isn't local!

Isn't that area part of the "rust belt "? I worked with titles for 12 years from all 50 states plus Territories, make sure all your ducks are in a row. 50 state air emissions, over 7500 miles if not. Correct DMV forms signed. Have fun standing in line. Kalifornia DMV is notorious for not giving you all the info you need if a extra trip is needed, even dealers have trouble. They find one thing missing, that's where they stop instead of looking everything over and telling you the total things needing to be in hand for second visit if needed. Plus, Kalifornia's electronic titling leaves much to be desired, as many other states too. Love my small town DMV, walkup part of the time, other times under an hour wait, may ask you what you are going to do as they help others, saving you from having then to fill out or find add'l paperwork.

It is the rust belt, hence cheap prices. This particular one was my friends, who is OCD. New recall frame and associated parts in 2017. Fluid film 2x a year. It's got rust by desert standards but nothing significant.

It's an 06 w/ 111k so the 7500 min mileage is no issue. While I concur that the California DMV is ruthlessly inefficient, it's not hard to do out of state stuff. We moved here from Ohio 3 years ago and got both cars done no problem. Since then we've bought 2 cars in Oregon, also got them plated no problem. Get the smog (from a vendor that can do out of state cars, not all can), go into DMV, do one form and present title, pay inordinate sum...
