So... I went to the dealer on Weds for an unrelated issue to the rear diff leak...

According to my dealership they did a routine inspection of my truck. They actually marked that there was no leaking etc. under my truck. I called corporate about it. This is ridiculous customer service.

With a new truck under warranty I ALWAYS take it to the dealer. It's their job and responsibility and it's also documented.

    Yeah.
I am not convinced they actually check all of this stuff unless you are already asking for other work. I know they did it on the 4Runner that I took in for a timing belt because they caught the brakes, but they were just looking for more work to do on it. I just bought a used Corolla and took it in for the CVT service campaign and they supposedly measured the brake pads. Pretty sure you have to take the wheels off for that, and I really don't think they did that.

Could be they looked at it your diff and since nothing was dripping off of it called it good.

Almost 4K miles on my '18 Pro and no signs yet. I just did the diff breather mod with a crankcase breather (should be able to breath freely with no pressure build up), so if it starts weeping we should know whether the pressure theory is invalid.

Slight weeping is not going to cause a catastrophic failure or worry me, but it's definitely not right for it to happen on a new vehicle. Maybe one with 100K miles and poor maintenance, but they need to figure this one out.

Dealership closest to me which is San Luis Obispo Toyota here in California tried to tell me it was moisture as well. I got pretty pissed. had no explanation as to why the oil level was low though. Said F*** em. Cleaned the area up and snugged up the bolts so far so good but keeping an eye on it. If it leaks again i will try a different dealer.

Definitely not enough of a leak to cause massive meltdown, but if you saw my before the initial fix pictures... That was a very significant leak. I won’t let them just brush me off I can promise you that. They should have fixed it right from the factory, but so many of us have had to take our trucks in. This is the second time they will be fixing it.

I wasn’t even part of the recall. It’s shady man.

I bought my truck in June 17. This was July 17. If you look close you can see the fluid drop on the differential. Remember, I wasn’t even part of the recall. Kinda weird huh?

    Yeah.
Part of the recall or not, that is still a warranty issue. Hearing anyone say that it is moisture or normal is just a joke. The designers certainly did not intend for this to happen, it is a clear defect in materials or workmanship (and possibly a bad spec on torque). I'm baffled as to why anyone would call that normal or try to brush it off, as well as why this is turning out to be so hard for them to fix.

Each time I talked to the dealer I got a different response
    -Water stain
    -Not leaking enough
Then the official response in the tech notes was - looked like residual under coating, cleaned area, took photograph, customer must monitor for leaks and bring back if mark returns.

During one of my exchanges they asked if I wanted to perform service under Toyota Care, including a free oil change. I guess they forgot, since I got a call this afternoon to return the truck for said oil change. Meh I'm just going to do it myself.

Hey, look on the bright side... as long as it's leaking, you know there is fluid in it!

I have a '65 Chevy. If I go out in the morning and there's no puddles under it, I know there's a problem...

Agreed for something more in depth, however my time is worth something. Something this simple, this is what I would do. I understand if others are not comfortable with it.

You are assuming they actually looked at it. I am pretty sure there is a LOT of pencil-whipping going on!

Yeah Battlefield has made an amazing transformation from the old building to what they have now for sure. They always treated me good with my other trucks, so I’m sure they are good still. I just like the finance manager at Warrenton. She is a really sweet lady. May just start going to a new dealership for any work though. Glad yours is good to go!

I totally agree. It just shows that they aren’t doing what they are supposed to do which sucks.

Welcome to TW! That definitely sucks. Take it back and have them redo it. Immediately after they return your truck to you, on your way home, stop by the parts store and pick up a torque wrench and the appropriate size torque nut then make sure it’s torqued to spec yourself.

    Specs found here:

The reason why I always take it to the dealer - depending on your state.... If it leaks again, you can send Toyota a final repair notice. They'll attempt to fix it for the 3rd time... and if it leaks for a 4th time, you've met a few other guidelines, and of course if you want, Toyota may be obligated to replace the truck. You may not want to... but you still have the option... If the truck is pretty much stock or things you can uninstall, then you could get it replaced and then start over with a brand new one.

I did that with my 2017 Silverado. It had 8,000 miles the first time I had it serviced for the issue. I got it replaced at 35,000. MSRP for MSRP for a 2018 Traverse for my wife.
