Traction in sand has been great and now the mud and snow are coming to Oregon, our Touareg has all wheel lock in a straight line and open when turning but in off road selection it locks the transfer case in and its all locked. Do the new Tacomas lock the axles in low range. If not what lockers do you guys recomend.59D6A04F-EDD9-49C0-B0DF-B92447F30936.jpg

Tacoma does not have a center differential, meaning the front and rear axle differentials receive the same driveshaft revolutions when in 4 wheel drive.
Your VW Toureg does have a center differential, that can be locked making it behave like your Tacoma's 4 wheel drive system.
Those vehicles are often referred to as all wheel drive or full time 4wd.

And I assume you know this, but in 4Hi and 4Lo, the Tacoma transfer is (by definition) locked. Your Touareg has a center differential which is normally open in AWD mode, but can be locked as you describe.

I like your praise to our Lord. So mine only has limited slip with traction control. Would it work better with a locker in the rear and leave the front open. I had a Jeep with four wheel lockers and it was all over a mud hill. Climbed good but the front was like a vette rear end, all over the place. I am 75 years young now and have been four wheeling since 74 but don’t get very hard core anymore but i still like a good solid rig. My taco is over getting 144 sq feet of sound dreading installed along with Infinity speakers. I pick it up in 1 hour. The sound meter said 74,6 decibels before . I hope its in the 40 range.

My old mine remembers our 92 4Runner with a sliding front diff. Engagement. That was new then with no hubs and i thought it was Star Trek. Wish i had kept that rig. Great platform

    Still stock completely capable!
You can add aftermarket front lockers. But a lot of people recommend not locking CVs you can do it and a lot of people on this forum will tell you they have done and it is flawless but you have a higher chance of breaking with CV’s

I’ve got an off-road, and honestly i haven’t hit a situation where i needed the rear diff locked that a-trac didn’t do just as well.

maybe if you’re doing axle twisters, or need the wheels to spin...

I’d imagine the traction control system
Is even more impressive with the automatics, given the crawl control tech

I believe TRACs is disabled in Crawl mode (for sure it is with diff locked). TRACs works well in Subaru and Volvo. I cannot wrap my mind around TRACs and drum brakes.

The truck only has one true "locker" and that's for the rear. I believe when the rear is locked, the front uses brake limited slip (aka A-TRAC, MTS, and Crawl Control), and when the rear is unlocked all four wheels use the brake limited slip. The limited slip system is quite good... much more clamping power than a standard traction control system, so you can use it to wheel up steep hills and through ruts.

Thanks Joe that explained it very well. I have snow socks for it and chains if it gets really icy. I like to know what the truck well do and now i understand how it works.

Don't worry. As long as you got good tires, and lock it in 4hi in a storm, the Taco will get through anything. You will not need your locker!

I love my new truck and the Infinity speakers i had installed yesterday along with 72 sq. Feet of sound deadening. I don’t know how much lower the noise level is yet but i hear the wind on the mirrors now. The speakers sound good, think its needs a bigger amp. Still.

Sounds like you need to sound deaden your mirrors.... :D

I put in a 8" underseat "powered subwoofer". The extra Oomph helps a lot and doesn't take up any space.
