always ran one on my ram and it was necessary. Would it be necessary on my 2015 4.0 Tacoma? Any pics or DIY's?

You can but they don't have pcv recirc issues. The intakes stay pretty clean even at really high mileage.

I've actually never seen a 4.0 with excessive blowby in all my years working on Toyota. Saw lots of Nissan VQ's with oil in the intake when I worked at Nissan for one year.

Here in Texas no worry about failing emissions. One thing I read is a guy had a code thrown because it caused a vacuum leak. He just tightened it up and was good to go. Other than that no problems. I'm at 100k miles. About to sea foam the truck. It's on original plugs so after that, oem denso plugs and oil.

Had it on for my smog in SoCal. The dude didn't mention my catch can. He was more interested in aftermarket y pipe and skids. The catch can is a good idea. Not only for your intake but exhaust as well. Do you call this clean combustibles? Screenshot_2018-05-14-18-23-17-01.jpg Screenshot_2018-05-14-18-19-38-01.jpg 20180514_120907-01.jpg

They may not be needed on our trucks. Can't really hurt, but may not be fully needed.

OTOH, if you ever buy a car or truck with direct injection ONLY, you better put one on or you may be faced with a $600-$1000 bill 30-40K down the road to clean out your intake valves.

If not mistaken, Toyota has a dual injection set up just to keep the intake valve clean by passing the fuel mixture over it to keep carbon in control.

I have had one on my taco for a couple of years now and it is suprising how much it collects. It gets drained same time as an oil change and I would guesstimate it has 1/4 to a 3rd cup in it. I put a valve in place of the drain plug so generally it takes longer to find an empty cup.

does anyone know if there is anywhere on the engine that can be used as a drain back

the Mann ProVent 200 offers this capability in the way of a port, hose, and one way oil valve
To allow the oil portion collected inside to drain back. Becoming maintenance free.

other nicer cans may also offer this

I just don’t know if the engine is compatible with that feature. If there’s a place to put that. That hopefully doesn’t involve drilling a hole anywhere.

I collected the sludge at each oil change and after about 45K mi:

    IMG_1839.jpg

    Miles current - 94000
Miles at catch can install - 49500
Miles on catch can - 44500
    Total Oz collected - 26
    Collected oz/mile - 0.00058427
    Collected oz/Oil change (5000 mi) - 2.921348315

    Is it worth it?
    You decide!

Yes for about 10k miles... After seeing what it catches? I'll keep it on. I do a lot of 5 mile commute trips so that has a bearing.

My VW is direct injection. It has a “can-less” catch can. If the VW lasts 50K miles I’ll swap it out. The Tacoma I don’t worry about.

VW has the system built into the engine. Usually integrated into the valve cover.

Eeehhh. 133K on my 4.0L. I’m not worried about it. Plenty of 4.0L’s with over 300K miles with not catch cans.

Got one to put on, but then I recently learned the difference between port and direct injection, and understand why the 4.0 doesn’t absolutely need one.
