I swapped my cap from my previous 16, which was professionally wired, to my new truck. My cap only has a positive an a negative, so that should be all I need. I have done a ton of searching, but I can't find anything on the 3rd gen, and from what I see on the wiring, it is different than the 2nd gen.

    Any help appreciated!

Assuming you did the removal on the 16', where did you unplug the wires from? Nothing has changed in the 17's so put it right back where it was. I am not sure if they tapped off tail lights, trailer harness, or 3rd brake. That will give us a better idea of the correct wire colors you are looking for.

I did not remove the wiring from the tail light portion of the other truck. I just bought a new matching waterproof connector.

Definitely my fault for not peeking where it was tapped on the truck before trading. It was definitely tapped into the drivers side tail light and not the trailer wiring harness

Pop a tail light out. You will be dealing with the Middle connector of the tail light.(triangle in shape)
Peel back the black loom to expose the wires.

    Tap the wires accordingly:
Negative from cap light ---->goes to White/black stripe
Positive from cap light---->goes to blue

May want to pop the plastic latch over and put a bit of dielectric/ silicone grease (metal contact portions) in there if you're near coastal areas or in mud and water often. I've seen exposed taps like that corrode joints at the point of entry into the jacketing.

It's actually not my picture. It was the PO's when he took off the shell I bought. However, mine does look similar since we used taps. I was going to redo it with a pigtail and a male/female quick disconnect.

Blue for positive and white with black stripe for negative.

Thank you to MesoJDM for his knowledge and to the OP for starting this thread. Wired up a third brake light for my KBVooDoo rack. When the RTT is up there it covers up the third brake light, now I just feel so much safer on the road with this light ;)

Haha yes! This helped me quickly find the right wires to tap into! Thank you all who contributed to this thread! I appreciate all the knowledge! Got the rear light working instantly on the Alucab canopy.

Has anyone built/bought a harness adapter instead of tapping into factory wires?

You can buy @mesojdm total tail and tap into that instead… that’s my plan at least

I'm just looking for the wire harness. If I could find the OEM connectors online, I will just build my own harness.

Is it better to tap into trailer wires? Vs tail light?
