I tried for years to get mine done. A Toyota tech finally reached out to Toyota as my VIN was not included, but he took pictures. It has been 3 years and no new rust has developed. I bought my Tacoma new in 2016 and still have it. Has 59000 miles, but I live in Iowa. Iowa uses a lot of sodium chloride and magnesium on the roads.

I repaired mine myself and it turned out well. The plaint blended OK and I ground out all visible rust. I suspect many of us still have some rust between panels however, so we’re only delaying the inevitable with a repaint.

If anyone is thinking about a DIY job, I’d say go for it. It seemed worth the effort on my truck.
