I just wipe it down with a shop towel. It doesn't need to be spotless, excess grease will just get flung around the undercarriage. Wiping it down with a shop towel has worked just fine.

The Slip Yoke is dry because the type of lubricant used is very expensive . Regular grease will only last a day . With this said , manufacturers cheap out and just dribble enough on the splines to make your truck feel new .
Spicer still has the driveshaft contract with Toyota . Spicer also makes driveshafts for General Motors , Ford and Chrysler
Adding a grease zerk to the slip yoke causes the slip yoke to extend and hydro lock .
The only way to properly lube the slip Yoke is by removing the driveshaft and manually applying the " Special Lube "
If you have a two piece driveshaft , reports are coming in there is a lack of lubricant on the splines of the slip and stub . Your truck will clunk when downshifting into first gear when cold . Takes a special lubricant
    This stuff will work http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/ptfe...-ford-motorcraft-xg-8-ml1167-31508-42027.html
And this stuff is said to be the best but pricey http://paceperformance.com/i-782162...bricant-high-temperature-c1-2-w-a-t-1-lb.html

Ive owned my truck for a few months now and while changing the oil I tried to grease the driveshaft and the u-joints don't have any grease fittings. The truck is a 2005 TRD Sport 4x4. Is this normal? No zerks on the caps or on the main body of the u-joints

I was just under there doing all of the drive fluids (F&R diff, transfer case and trans.) Why didn't I think to do this then? :annoyed: :homer:

I have a 2011 tacoma 4x4 dbl cab, it has about 90,000 miles and I’ve never lubed the drive shaft U-joint. It’s my guess it’s time to lube them. What grease do you recommend to use for my tacoma?

I like the Lucas Red-N-Tacky but any quality chassis and bearing grease is going to be fine.

Sub’d. I have been getting a loud thud as well when I brake. Sounds like the driveshaft. Truck only has 15k on it.

Me too... this is something my father instilled in me when he taught me how to change the oil on his '84 Toyota Pickup. Back then it was every 3k miles.

Odorless mineral spirits should make it much easier to wipe away. Just soak some blue shop towels and wipe.

    Thread revival!

I actually just greased my zerks this weekend. Pretty easy stuff. Used mobil synthetic pink grease.

Only thing that was strange was that I had a hard time getting the grease gun house off the zerk. Once it was on it was a bit difficult to get off, is that normal or is it my grease gun?

So I was able to get the 2 on the front shaft without any issue. Then found the one behind the transfer case, and the one after the carrier bearing. But... The one on the rear diff is just not there. No fitting on any of the ends of the u joint. What is going on?
