So, if you haven't heard, with the Real ID Federal requirements, lines at the DMV have gone bonkers. 6 - 8 hours waits, and that's with an appointment. :annoyed::annoyed:

That's here in Los Angeles. I've heard rumors that if you drive to some DMV offices outside of the greater LA area you can find wait times of an hour or less.

Anybody confirm the wait time not being all day at a DMV where you can get a DL renewed?

If you want the Real ID you have to go into the office, can't renew online.

No, for the Real ID (yes, that's the official name) you have to go into the DMV Driver's License offices.

Costa Mesa during the week is not too bad. I believe my time start to finish is about 1 hourish.

I can confirm that. Take a drive to a small town dmv. There’s usually no wait and the employees will sometimes be friendly. Did this all the time when I lived in the Bay Area.

Lost my wallet and needed a new DL so that I could get another ID replacement pronto. Looked to get an appointment and that was about a month out. I went to Westminster and it took 6 hours. The lines certainly increased after CA decided they needed to get all illegals registered to vote.

Was easy for me. Do the online forms and they give you a number. Show up in line in the morning and you’re directed straight in with a number. No appointment needed!

Double check your forms of ID ahead of time and bring backup forms just in case. Was done and done in an hour or so.

Not nearly as bad as I was thinking. One of my techs was in and out using the same method.

How can the illegals vote? Don't you have to be a citizen to vote?

Put on yer tin foil hats, guys. ::eye roll::

RealID is just a federally compliant ID. That’s it.

Different than a drivers license for some states who do not verify citizenship and therefore are not federally compliant forms of ID. It’s a federally approved ID card doubling as your DL.

If you don’t want one, you don’t have to get it. But if you want to fly after a certain date, your passport will be required even if domestic routes or you won’t clear TSA.

Well, not always. If you allow someone to sign you up or you 'mistakenly' answer the questions incorrectly, the MOTOR VOTER LAW in CA decriminalized voting in an election if you are not legally allowed to. Read it... https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201520160AB1461

    So the follow up.

My DL expires this month. I tried making an appointment but the earliest was 2 months away, another office didn't have availability until April. Tried 4 offices and nothing less than 2 months.

I ended up with time today so last night I got online and filled out the forms I could. That helps when you get to the office.

I went to my closest DMV. Out of curiosity I checked for appointments, they were "full" and weren't taking any.:bananadead: Got there just before 7am, they open at 8. I was about the 12th person in line. At 7:45am they opened the door and let the first 15 inside. I told the first DMV person I had started the process online and had a confirmation number. That moved me further up in line. I was given a form and told to write my confirmation number on it and go wait at a window. At the window they put more info on the form and took my documents (passport, utility bill, SS card, current DL). Then I had to sit and wait for my number to be called.

At about 8:05 I was called to a window. They took my thumb print, eye test, and filled out more forms. Then I was sent for photos, where they took another thumb print and my photo. I then returned to my previous window and was given a paper temp DL (about a 6"X8" piece of paper ) and was told my DL would be mailed in 2 - 3 weeks.

    Left the building at 8:20am.

When I took my friend about 5 months ago to an office on his side of town it took over 6 hours.
