Definitely extra “stuff” with its accompanying weight is a trade-off. I do have a come-along and carried it for years (I’m a professional forester) but hate using it - It’s slow and I’m old! You’re right about the sliders. But don’t you think a front bumper and a replacement front skid plate in aluminum are cheap insurance? And not much additional weight? Wondering how much the standard front bumper weighs, I think an aluminum one is about 70 pounds. An awning with a velcroed bug screen would have been nice as we’re hoping to find six summers in a row (south of the equator in Jan and the northern areas in June). But blast it does add up into real weight. Maybe I’ll cut down on my changes of underwear, ha ha

as a motorcyclist, I have watched the series "long way 'round" where Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman circumnavigated earth on motorcycles with sponsorship from BMW and many many support staff. my favorite part of the documentary is when they are talking to a woman that was one of the russian advisors. when they showed her the route she said " do you realize that is where the russian government sent people that they never wanted to see again? and you would like to go there for holiday?

That was a great series, but man-o-man is Ewan McGregor a whiner. I mean, I understand what they did was tough, but by the end of it I was ready to :smack:

I would not want to be riding motorcycles in some of the African national parks. I don't think it's allowed because you would turn into food quickly

I disagree. That build looked absolutely amazing, and the workmanship was beyond incredible: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hodakaguys-overland-tacoma-builds-on-to-new-adventures.528480/

However, based on the fact they sold both trucks immediately, before ever really using them as intended (from what I can tell), I speculate it was a case of bolting 2000 lbs of overland Jazz to a mini-truck with huge tires and then figuring out it drove and handled like absolute shit after the fact. Too much building and not really enough learning the true capabilities of the platform.

Tacoma’s are only tolerable for travelling when they are kept reasonably light and nimble-footed. Bogged down with too much bloat, and they will just annoy you, especially on long drives. Just my opinion.

    Saw you’re going through Africa..

Get ready for some knarly roads and shit going sideways. Check out this trip report: https://imgur.com/gallery/bSOKf note the sections where you need to time your trip around the dry season.

I agree with what someone else mentioned, you might be better off with diesel, either way, it’s going to be epic! Super stoked for you!

Some damn good advice right here! Would’ve never even thought about half of it. I haven’t even come close to what some of the people on this site do as far as camping and adventure goes so I would be way out over my skis for a trip like this....good luck and enjoy. I have learned that about 80% of the crap I took with me on my first camping trip was unnecessary and ultimately unused, pack wisely!

Thanks! Definitely need to time things around the dry season. Note they’re driving a heavy vehicle well over 10 tons, ours will be less than 4. weight matters!

Also http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/. A wealth of knowledge there for world travelers. You might also look into attending Overland Expo West, https://www.overlandexpo.com/, it will be held in May this year in Flagstaff. OLE West has tons of classes like, Border Crossings, map/gps navigation, first-aid, winching, towing, righting overturned vehicles. Usually given by former Camel Expedition people. Loads of fun.
You can get a lot of good proven and tested info on both sites from people who have actually done a RTW or extended overland journey, without a lot of fluff or anecdotal misinformation.

Agreed. Most vehicles are designed for a certain amount of weight load.

Take the HMMWV for example. A beefy vehicle that was designed with heavy weight and mobility in mind. However, watching the various levels of armor increase over the course of multiple deployments, I can tell you even it has a max. We blew transmissions, shocks, engines, you name it. The drive train became compromised and compared to zero armor, the the performance went way down. This is an extreme example BUT the point being is moderation.

You would be surprised how quickly daily gear weight adds up. Look at the have to haves, figure out their weight and THEN work back with the add ons to the vehicle. Things like extra plastic gas cans can replace metal gas cans or tanks.

Also I would seriously consider a diesel platform, might be worth a trip to buy a helix and bring it back. A lot of 3rd world countries use diesel and propane over gas. The gas you do get is often of low quality.

Also keep in mind areas like the Middle East, 4 bikers were killed in Tajikistan, near Pakistan. Anywhere with rampid terrorism and pirates (Central Africa) can be a real concern.

Just my 2 cents. Either way, this is both and ambitious and amazing plan!

If you're wedded to the Tacoma that may be kinda rough. Inside toilet and shower??? I guess you have a plan for that.

Someone said having easy access to the rear living area from the cab is a good idea, I concur, think about a used Mercedes diesel 4WD van/camper conversion.

The Tacoma, I would remove the rear window and put a boot onto it to access the living area.

Yup, both the FWC fleet and the XPCamper V2 have toilets/showers, abet tiny. I thought about buying a new diesel Hilux and then somehow getting it here to outfit it, but was too difficult. I like the idea about simply removing the rear window and installing a boot, as direct access in an emergency is critical.

I've following a guy driving around Africa and he has been to a lot of spots, he has found the locals to be friendly and helpful, more friendly than a lot of people here in North America. Have a great trip! and he shipped his Jeep from Canada to use.

This is perfect and not long enough, my fingers are smoking taking notes. West Africa is one place i know I'm going to be sweating getting through, not much infrastructure there

Yeah, Dan Grec of The Road Chose me is awesome. I think Dan mentioned in a few of his posts saying that two people in a Jeep was too small,, he's back to being single. Don't want that to happen with my wife
