I’m not OP but I will say after buying my ‘14 new I was disappointed that I could have got the new one if I would have waited just a bit. That being said the new transmission alone makes me glad that I have my older truck. I don’t want the Bruce Jenner transmission. Confused tranny.

I’m told to tow my boat with the overdrive off to stop transmission searching as it will tear shit up. How does that work with a truck that constantly searches just towing it’s own ass?

I'm kinda wondering if OP drove a Ranger yet.

I drove a 2019 Tacoma and a 2019 Ranger on the same day.

While the Ranger was certainly lacking in some areas, engine power was not one of them.

I didn't need a spreadsheet or calibrated butt dyno to know that the Ranger was significantly stronger.

You really went out of your way on this one eh. Slow? First time I've heard that one. Especially when comparing it to a Tacoma.

Are you sure you didn't stumble into an old Ranger instead? The new Ranger is roughly a second faster to 60 than a G2 Tacoma. Also, the Supercab optioned-rangers get a bed that is 72 inches long (if you're math challenged, that's exactly 6 feet).

That being said, I was struck by how cheap the interior materials seemed when I test drove one. And the interior does seem cramped. But slow? Glad you love your truck, but maybe you're mistaking noise for speed, because I remember my G2 doing a lot of yelling when you put your foot down but not being particularly quick in spite of it. :notsure:

nada....maybe a license plate one day & BA bumpers
4 bangers are a joke yall
    even with turbo
if you like the new ranger & its power you must by 19 yrs old

    real drivers push v8's
    (or at least a v6)
4 banger ranger is whack at best
should put a 6 cyl in there ford
then I would respect it, like the 4.0 v6 ranger of old....loved that little beast

Do people actually buy midsize trucks to red light race them? Nobody is impressed that a ranger owner is can hit 60mph “quickly”. Hit 60k miles without problems first.

I’d take a turbo 4 over day over a 6 cyl that feels like a dog. Maybe the 4.0 isn’t so bad but the 3.5 leaves a lot to be desired. I wish my taco had the rangers powertrain.

Some people buy trucks to use them as a truck.

If a truck is a dog when empty, it will be an even worse dog when loaded and by most accounts the Ranger tows great.

The benefit of having power for towing/hauling is that when the truck is empty it feels very sprightly.

Everyone seems to like to red light race if they think their vehicle is "sprightly".

When I had my Camaro SS the main people who wanted to race were women driving V6 minivans.

They would powerbrake at the light to try and jump in front of me, even though most people don't buy minivans to red light race them.

Tacoma’s aren’t going to win any races. Most people buy them because they want a reliable and capable light duty truck. After thousands of miles of towing with my 2nd and 3rd gen, I never got the feeling that they were dogs. But then again it’s completely subjective. I have a hard time believing your minivan story. Maybe a 1 time occasion, but I doubt the main demographic of people trying to race you were women in vans. And if it was to get in front of you, maybe it was to position themselves where they needed to be on the roadway, and not “race” you.

Believe it or not, the minivans were the ones always wanting to beat me at the light, usually at a spot where two lanes converge into one up ahead.

I wasn't saying that the Tacoma was a dog as it isn't.

I was saying that the Ranger is peppy and by most accounts tows well because of its power.

The OP came on and said the Ranger was slow and it isn't, well, it isn't compared to other mid-size trucks anyway.

Also people sometimes get a false sense of how quick their vehicle is and tend to sometimes try and flaunt it on the road.

A friend of mine used to have a 1970 Camaro that was done up pretty nice. Just basic hop ups, nothing extreme.

He came up at a light next to a sedate looking Gremlin (this was mid 80's. Gremlins were still on the roads) and decided to rev at it.

When the opposing light turned yellow he said he heard the Gremlin's cut-outs open and then realized it was a V8.

He later found out a modified 401 V8 actually. It smoked him bad.

When I had the SS (2002 SS, only intake and exhaust) plenty of people wanted to race me but more minivans than anything and always probably because they thought their V6 felt peppy off the line and could beat that black car to the merge.

And yes, I had a lady powerbrake her Dodge Caravan to try and beat me from the light.

She was hunched over the wheel and focused on the light.

The only reason I noticed is because I suddenly was able to hear her engine over my radio.

I don't street race anymore, not anybody and not at any time.

Too many distracted drivers on the road.

That's also the reason I no longer have a fast car. No opportunity to enjoy it.

Believe me Ford doesn't need your respect. Ranger is a great truck much better than the 2016 Tacoma I sold. I have four Tacoma's last one being a 2016. The third gen is a piece of shit. Especially when comparing to the second gen.. I've had my Ranger for over a year now not a single problem. At this point in time with the third gen I had all kinds of s*** noises whine and a no power Drive train, leaks...In my experience owning both, The Ranger is much better than the third gen Tacoma. I never heard so many "they all do that" from Toyota service

THat said I pay cash for my vehicles I can buy any truck. In this case the RAnger is better in many metrics as well.

"Its a Characteristic of the truck they all do it" I guess they all do then...Im out. after four TACOMAS. I'm decided to jump in without giving Toyota the chance to prove their worth blindly. I'll never do that again.

Wait, you've had it a year and the engine and transmission haven't locked up yet?

Yep and my comment was aimed at the OP. Point is that it’s silly if you’re main concern with a midsize truck is how peppy or quick it is. Both trucks are going to tow medium loads just fine. Neither stood out to me when hauling with them, whether in the mountains or flat grades. Different power bands from different drivetrains. I personally found the 6MT to be much better suited with the V6, and they’re basically just as “quick” as the rangers. I think people often forget that today’s 6 Cyl and 4 Cyl engines are putting out numbers similar or higher to V8s from only 15-20 years ago.
