I always had a paper filter I put in the truck while the K&N was drying. I've saved my original OEM filter to use when the AFE needs washing. The truck is always usable.

Again - I'm not argueing your points. I'm simply saying....it's a personal preference. Those people who use oiled filters - shouldn't be bashed for liking them. I see that alot on forums....

^LOL! The "Oiled Filter Bashing Association", President and also a client. What do you do, provide counseling for those that have been bashed for using an oiled filter?

Seriously, I don't see your point here. You've been presented with facts and you choose to ignore them. That says it all. Not only that, you say people are being bashed for their choice of filter. Please tell us where the bashing took place because I sure don't see it.

Yeah. I know I wasn't bashing anyone. I was just saying I don't understand why someone would buy a product that costs more in the long run, takes longer to clean, and does have a chance of damaging the engine. I don't really care how many people have used it without problems. They fact that it HAS caused problems is enough to choose an alternative.

I mean, would you spend money on some mod that cost more to maintain, took more time, would give you marginal performance gains, and could potentially explode? And had documented cases of such? Seriously, would you even consider it an option for a daily driver you put your family in?

Look for the AFE Pro Dry filter. It's a drop in OEM replacement. :D

Should cost between $50 and $70 depending on where you find it...

I haven't seen any facts. Your oppinions are not fact.
I chose to ignore your oppinions because I have my own. :p:p

Facts can only come from the engineers who designed the oiled filters. Those engineers designed the filters for a reason - how/why/what. Those companies are also still in business, so obviously, those filters are still being purchased. Again - choice.

Bashing = trying to convince people and/or making people believe their oppinions are full of chit.

Nobody's oppinions are wrong......Oppinions are based on experiences. Not everyone has the same experiences or oppinioins. That's why people have the freedom to believe or disbelieve anything they read on the forums.

Yup...I like to stick up for the little guys and I love the challenge. :p

...With the AFE Pro-Drys there is a spray of some sort for them also, what is up with them, they aren't on the AFE website, nor does AutoAnything carry them, but the dude from AFE told me that they do make it, and it does help ... he never said if it was nesessary though.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but where do you guys buy your AFE Pro Dry S filters at? I keep seeing people say they are $40-$50 but the cheapest I can find them anywhere is $60 before shipping.

    None!
Regarding oil analysis, I'm not sure I'd do it for my truck but the expensive flat 6 engine in my 4 seat airplane gets an oil analysis with every change. We're mostly looking for increases in the amounts of aluminum and iron as indications that the engine may be starting to make metal.

Dirt can get past the filters and it typically shows up as high silica count. I've had it happen because the airplane sat for months while I was away on an assignment. I don't know anything about oiled filters but I can tell you we use dry paper elements in aircraft engines and replace them after a few hundred hours.

The only way to know for sure what's going on with ANY engine is oil analysis. I don't do it every oil change but I've done it twice in 15K miles on the Tacoma and what I've been using seems to do a good job. I'm not going to make a $25K investment and not be sure that it will last.

I have my oil samples check every so often, and I can tell ya that when I used an oiled filter, my samples were not as good as I expected. Ever since I switched back to OEM I have had very good samples.

Just to play the fence: Some of the best tested filters in the world are oil based...where is your proof that dry is better?

Do you have a link to these filters?
FWIW, the best filtering filters I have seen have been dry filters.

I ask you the same: Where is your proof that oiled is better? Bobistheoilguy.com has tested filters. Did you read the posts above where we said that we did oil studies? That's enough for me.

^OEM isn't engineered to be reused while an AFE ProdryS is.

BTW, "discussions" are merely opinions like the ones given here.

Most likely, you'll never have a problem with your engine no matter which filter you use. Like you say, it's more a matter of opinion than anything else. This is an enthusiasts forum and we looking messing around with our vehicles so folks are going to go with what works for them. Nothing wrong with that.
