DTRL Lens Melting

Friend of mine who works for Toyota said they are making new lights to solve this problem. They are still in the prototype stage as he's seen the pic of them.

 

I having the same issue with my lens melting and cracking. I brought it in to Toyota for an oil change and told them about the issue. They said my warranty is up (39k now) and my extended warranty most likely won't cover it. I told them that's a load of crap! This didn't just happened overnight and it was something I didn't expect to happen because it was a Toyota. They told me they will look into it and let me know. By the time my oil change was completed, the service guy told me he had some of the techs look at my light and the techs told him the bulbs I have are not stock. I replied and said I haven't changed them and know for a fact no one has since I brought the truck from the dealership. I walked over to a showroom tacoma, raised the hood and took out the bulb. I asked "are these the same bulbs that are in my truck". Sure enough they were and the service guy admit the techs misinformed him. He then took pictures and told me he will get with the service manager to see what they can do. I should received a call back today about it. While I waited I decided to do some research on this issue and sure enough found this tread. As I am writing this I received a call from the service guy to let me know I need to bring my truck in so they can determine what's causing it. I agreed but they still didn't say if they were going to replace it. I got another call minutes later and it was the service guy telling me he had searched the forums and the issue was being discussed. His rep received several compliants about the same issue. HE IS ORDERING ME NEW ONES TO REPLACE MY DEFECTIVE LIGHTS! YEA!!! That's what I am expecting when I purchased a Toyota. Thanks to Toyota and the service guy that did his research!

 

get ready it will do it again just getting to hot for constant light on all the time.... only fix will be something with less wattage possibily

 

This is just off the top of my head. I lowered the wattage from what I believe is 28 watts to 26 watts, although I didn't have a problem in 3 1/2 years in on my '06.

I lowered the wattage when I got my '10.

 

Not that it's gonna repair the damage, but
How 'bout converting to LED's,

ok same problem here but i switched out with a friend for his bhlm before i could take it to the stealer but my socket looks burnt, there is a brand new bulb in there but it wont effin light up!

 

Mine where doing that, so i went to the stealership, got them replaced with a leaf TSB and ticking blower fan. They replaced the headlights with new ones with a bulb that is yellow instead of the actual plastic.

 

great i wonder what run around they will give me as i have 55ws hids maybe i should just put stock bulbs back in

 

I saw a few used trucks with melty turns front and back. I figured it was someone trying to be gangsta.

Hey guys Great news.... I think i may have solved the DTRL lens melting problem!!

I just found some 6.7W bulbs dual filament that Fit and work in the DTRL. I'm assuming 6.7W burns cooler than 8.3W (factory bulbs) so hopefully this will at least stop or slow down the melting. I just put in a set and they work fine!

it's been a few months since you installed the new 6.7 watt bulbs. How are they doing? Have you noticed any more melting of the lenses or discoloring or light housings, etc?

Are the new bulbs noticeably less bright than the factory bulbs?

Have you done any temp tests to see what temp each of the bulbs burns at?

If anyone else has changed to the lower wattage bulbs, feel free to chime in.

I don't have the DRL's but have been concidering LED's there.
So I can convert to the corner marker / directional mod
Anyone tried LED's to solve their melting problem?

hey DS.. new Bulbs are doing great!! havent noticed any bubbling or discoloration. When I put bulbs in.. i installed them in newer '07 headlamps at same time. 07s were in excellent cond, so didnt have any comparison in brightness..but i can say that Lamps w/bulbs look totally as bright as factory. Dont have equip for temp test... for 5 bucks totally worth a shot IMHO. GL

Does anyone know where to get the lens that is melted replacement and a part #. Because I can not find one
