    In your setup, protecting the wire is a smart move. Anyone for that matter of there is a battery in the bed. Might want to just put one on the positive going to the bed in the front of the truck. Then one on the negative side of the battery in the bed. Can't arc of there's no negative ;)

    Hah well maybe it was a little less than that I don't remember exactly, but it was alot more expensive than I thought. I also bought some tools I didn't have so that I could make the cables myself (large cutters and a hydraulic crimper) so I added that into the cost. I also have a decent amount of cable left over for other projects. The two yellowtops alone were close to 400 when I bought them with a discount. Mount was another 150 or so, then the isolator was another 150. So there's 700 right there without any cable or connectors lol

    Sheesh..i just got one more yellow top, case for like 30 bucks, 140amp alt for 135 bucks, 500amp solenoid for 50 bucks, some 4 ga wire, and ends and i had everything else to solder it all up haha

    i considered it one of my smaller projects really. Love having it thats for sure.

    The battery business is booming thats for sure. I like the idea of lighter lithium based systems though. With the proper access to the cells, at the right price point, could make a killing on them. The LIPO/ LiFe/ etc. market is still in its infancy in my opinion. Other Chemistries too. I feel the issue would only be the AH ratings. Would be nice to have a Group 31 sized battery with close to 200ah though. at a fraction of the weight.

    Fuses or circuit breakers are not used in path between your your starting battery (or auxiliary battery) to the starter solenoid because on a cold morning, depending on the temperature, you could require in access of 500 amps to crank your engine. The primary purpose auxiliary battery is for deep cycle loads and should be a deep cycle battery. Starting batteries are designed for shallow discharges and when used in deep cycle applications will prematurely fail.

    Negative side. - Yes, it would accomplish the same thing for th battery in the rear. So if an arch started, it would blow the Positive side up front first, then the negative side a split second later in the rear. BUT now that battery would be completely isolated from the system and even though the arch point would still exist. There is no way for it to continue to arch. The battery is not grounded at that point. SO the circuit cannot complete.

    Still ground though from the other battery. So without something on the hot wire the ground doesn't seem worth it.

    He was saying he wanted 2 breakers. One on the HOT in the engine bat to the rear. Then the other on the hot side in the rear of the truck still would accomplish the same thing.

    The wire would be compromised if the breakers tripped. The battery in the rear would be offline or separated at that point. The issue that happened would still be there.

    I was nearly imposing to move the one in the rear to the negative post. it would do the same thing but completely isolate the battery with the one blown in the front on the HOT and the NEG blown on the rear.

    With the same outcome. This way just protects both sides of the circuit.

    Take a 9v square battery. Lick one post, now lick the other, ok? Now lick them both.

    For good or bad, just one approach. BUT Bill said no, so might want to take that into consideration. I do. I have none of the battery protected with breakers. The only additional protection I have is the braided loom on it, and my solid connections I made on them.

    I am willing to pick one up. I need to know where or who has a reliable one. Anyone have a recommendation? If not I'll get some research done before the EXPO and make proper arrangements.

    This is the crimper I have. It works quite well, but the dies are metric. You have to do a partial crimp and then turn the lug to finish it. That way you don't get the wings on the crimp.

    An example of the work this crimper can do. That's 1/0 cable, and there are plenty of larger dies left if you're going with a larger gauge.

    They probably do. I'll stick with the $50 unit for occasional use though.
