    Hey guys,

How long does it typically take for the bead bags to open up and fill the tire effectively?
I just put a new set of 33” ko2s on my 1st gen and probably put about 1500kms since installing the beads and still have horrible wobble. Truck is mint and had no such wobble before with previous tires.

    Thanks!
    Scott

You were supposed to open up the bags and pour in the beads. I could only imagine the wobble you're experiencing.

I have always heard the bags break open when you drive off…

The bag is a thin felt like material that should open, but the only thing that guarantees it is pouring them or adding opened bags into the tire. That was also the manufacturers recommendation.

I’m looking to go this route of bead balancing sometime this spring on a new set of wheels/tires. I’ll be hopefully mounting some new rubber on some new stamped steelies in my driveway, adding beads, and being done with it.

One thing I’ve noted amongst all the reviews and threads across multiple forums is the hit or miss results. If your current combo of wheel/tire requires 4-6oz of lead counterweight then it would make sense in my head to use possibly 6-8oz of beads. The stick on weights are a static counterweight and the beads are more…’dynamic’. Meaning every time you slow enough for gravity to disrupt their position they must get back up to speed to rebalance. Also any large bumps/potholes/etc can disrupt them.

The hit or miss results can likely be attributed to interior carcass design. If there’s any internal ribbing it can cause the beads to ‘settle’ out of balance. Think of a roulette wheel and 20 balls put on it at one time. If the ridges could be mechanically smoothed out or possibly lighter and larger beads, maybe even marble sized used it could be beneficial.

As for the results of it balances at a certain speed but not above nor below said speed would seem to me to be shifting beads. Possibly due to air pressure. All tires have a belly/bulge on the bottom where the weight is focused. For larger offroad tires this is further exacerbated by additional sidewall and wider footprint. It could possibly be that this is disrupting the beads at a certain tire RPM. If this is the case I’d try dropping 5psi and see if this balanced band of ground speed is shifted to a faster MPH. If so, front tires may need more PSI than rear to offset the bulge due to additional engine weight unless you’re kitted out overlanda style.

I'm coming up on 8 years of use with beads and they are still working great in my Toyos. Truck is smooth as glass on interstate at all speeds. The only time I have experienced issue is if accelerating hard from dead stop into a hard right they might miss balance. Only has happened like at on ramp andi just pull over and let them reset and take off again. It's rare, but that's it.

Truck is due for new tires soon and I'll probably rinse and repeat.

Ordered up some new stamped wagon wheels, 31s, and the 2mm ceramic beads. 8oz per corner.

Got them mounted up this AM. Tire guy said these Kanati Mud Hogs were the worse he’s mounted in the year or so he’s been there. Thick, stiff beads and heavy sidewalls. He put my beads in and wanted me to give some follow up on how they work out.

There’s a slight shimmy around 45-55mph then it smooths out.

Put about 900 miles on them today. Performed amazing. You’ll get some wobble in some twisty roads but it smooths out in the straights.
