ECGS Bushing Tool Confusion!

    Hey All. I am ready to order the ECGS bushing and tools after the local 4WD shop gave me an outrageous (At least in my mind) quote to supply and install the bushing. I found there are multiple options under 'Add Install Tool' as shown below. I want the bushing and seal driver but am confused about the BRG/Race Driver as it does not allow me to choose both items, it's one or the other when adding. Is this something separate from the bushing and seal install and do I require it? Truck has 12,000kms (6,800miles) on it so I don't suspect anything else will need to be replaced while doing this job.

    The “bushing and seal installer” is a tool specifically designed to install the ECGS. bushing and the seal:

    The “bearing/race driver” is a set of drivers that is not specifically designed for the ECGS bushing, like this:

    $600.00 CAD parts and labor and they had the bushings already in stock. They said 2 hours labor. Average shop rate here is $125-$175/hr. They are essentially charging me $250.00 for the bushing, seal and some diff fluid. I know they have overhead and I expected some markup but this seems steep to me. It ended up costing me $250.00 CAD shipped from ECGS for the bushing, seal and tools. Once I am done I can toss the tools up for sale and hopefully recoup a couple bucks and pass some savings along to a fellow Tacoma owner.

    Dude do it yourself. It was very easy and straight forward. Actually one of the easiest mods I did to mine. If you jack the driver side high enough, you wont lose any gear oil. You can even use a socket sized right to set the bushing. When pulling the needle bearing out, chances are you're going to break off a piece of the race. Just make sure you get the fragments out with an extendable mechanic's magnet. There is also a very simple mod to do to the extraction tool to make it easier to seat behind the needle bearing. It involves grinding a little chamfer on it. Good luck!

    I am going to do the job myself. Thanks for the tips. I will still do some reading up on this until the parts arrive. Does not seem to be that bad at all.

    One more tip only because I care. When re-installing the cv axle, make sure the C clip retainer (near the splines) has the opened part facing down. Facing up, it hangs down too far and this is what people fight when trying to get it back in.

    This is key. Same on cv removal, if your having to fight it terribly rotate the axle slightly and try again. Eventually it will pop easily.
