I've been riding dirt and I've always wanted a Harley, but I don't know sh*t about them! All I know is that they use a V Twin engine with a unique 45 degree angle. My favorite bike is the Fatboy. I'm going for a motorcycle endorsement on my license, and my dad has a Fatboy and a Roadking he wants us to ride on the coast. Can you guys teach me about the different models of Harleys, like Dynas and Street bobs? What makes them unique? Where would you recommend me looking for a used Wide Glide?

Simplest answer is go to your closest dealer and talk to them.

Both answers are more than adequate. You can always freshen up by watching the complete series of "sons of anarchy". We will want to hear about your turf wars here

Part of the reason for my infatuation with Harley's is spending more time on a beach cruiser than my feet growing up, and Sons of Anarchy being the only TV show I've watched start to finish. I started putting engine kits on beach cruisers and decided I was selling myself short.

Can't be upset about that. I rode street bikes for years.. i am looking to build a rigid pan head kicker bobber but if I were buying new I would look at a Harley 48. My personal preference..

Yeah, but the leather clad chicks in stinky bars... that's worth something.

Alls I know is it's a scene, and you'd better like the scene or else it's a fuckton of money for occasional use. Sounds like your dad has prepped you, at least you already know the ups and downs.

With your size I would shoot for a dyna platform. Small frame and full size motor. Mid controls will keep you familiar with your dirt stuff yet you have the option for forward controls if you want.

You can also do a soft tail for more comfort.

If you are gonna cruise long distance I would shoot for something with a fairing. Street glide or road glide

Are you able to tell me what Dyna, softtail, and fairing means?

One thing to decide now is if you want bags or not, a fairing or not. If you don't want bags or possibly just leather in the future then something in the Dyna or Softtail families. Or a Dyna Switchback which comes with factory bags. Your size + first street bike = you don't want anything too heavy.

If you want hard bags then a Road King is heat and will be good to start out with as it's not too heavy. Next heaviest after that is a Street Glide or Electra Glide Standard.

The pre-2009 fuel injection is kind of crappy for thing but is reliable.

Get one with the 6 speed transmission. 5 just ain't enough, especially on the highway.

Dyna, Softtail, Road King, etc are the model. They make sub-models of the platform. Kind of like different grades of Tacoma

Easiest way to tell a Dyna is it has no fairing, exposed rear shocks and a full size fuel tank unlike a Sportster. The guys on SOA mostly rode these. Many bikers consider this the standard, definition of what a Harley is all about.

Softtail has hidden rear shocks. Meant to look like the choppers of old that had no rear shocks which are known as hard tails.

Fairing it's the big thing on the handle bars with a windshield, radio and speakers attached.

I took the MSF course and got my license. I'm looking for a Dyna lowrider or street bob or street glide with an engine at least as big as a 1200. Can anyone tell me what year these bikes got standard fuel injection?
