my buddy has a GREAT toyota shop. he is always very honest with me. he done things for free.

i have this weird noise. in all my years, i've never heard anything similar. i certainly cannot mimic it with my voice. it is a mix of metal grinding noise, and rumbling sheet metal. it ONLY does it pulling away, with the truck stone cold. and only for about 50 yards. after that i goes away, and you will not get it to happen again, all day. hench, it is bitch to find.

right front..it sounds like the right front. i checked exhaust, bearings..loose sheet metal. i cried, UNCLE!! and dropped it off. you guess it. no noise! haha. my buddy kept it over night, and pulled it into his shop backwards..this morning, VAROOM! he pulled out with his main mechanic. WTF is that? they heard it.!!

they think it is the beginnings of a bad upper ball joint. they are going to get it up on a lift to see. i dont know about that..maybe the pivot point of the UCA?

guesses? i have spring turkey hunting coming up. i need this thing!!

Stumped everyone. Waiting for it to get worse so we can find it. They heard it too.

If it is that subtle and limited in duration/frequency, just keep your ear on it. When it starts to worsen it will be easier to pin point and fix it right. Don't go replacing parts trying to chase sounds before you know for sure what it is. Its doubtful it will fail catastrophically.

Damn. Update. Noise is louder and happens more often and for a longer duration. The good news? It was easier to identify. I am almost sure it is my tranny. It now does it when I'm not rolling and the truck is in D and the truck is cold. As it warms up noise goes away mostly. I'm gonna have my fluid level checked. Noise goes away when I move it to neutral.

Hope it is just a simple Fluid level problem.

Stock intake piping still? If so, pull the pipe from the inner fender to the air cleaner box and try it for a couple days without the pipe. Mine rubbed on the inner fender and did exactly as you describe, only when cold, and way worse in colder weather. If that is the cause of your noise, reinstall the piping a bit turned on the airbox, as shown, until there is more clearance to the inner fender and the noise stops.

    noise comes and goes.

comes on when i put the truck in D..goes away in neutral.

landphil..that is an interesting idea. mmm..

i wish this..or i'm simply half a quart low on tranny fluid. :)

either way. i promise to update.

No. I'm driving the thing to AZ to deer hunt. Runs fine. We can't pinpoint the noise. At this point I'm hoping it gets worse so we can find it. Fun!

Starting to think this more and more. How do you suggest checking them? All the heat shields are attached tight. My brother thinks is is coming from inside my dash.

I had a rattling- ended up removing the two heat shields on the front exhaust under the cab. Noise was gone. Now, it may have to do with the vibration under load- i.e. when you're in drive, there will be vibration and it may be a heat shield vibrating when cold. Then, there's no load or vibration when you're in neutral so the noise goes away. That, and when there's load but the shields have heated up enough, the noise goes away.

The easiest thing would be to get underneath and bend the heatshields to be 100% sure they don't rub anything and then drive to listen for noises. Easy, and free way to eliminate them as being the culprits.

Did you try removing the intake pipe for a few days like I suggested to see if there was any change?

It was a brilliant place to check. Moving it with my hands, I could tell what you heard on your truck. Good job!

It got strangely better. I touched something that helped. ????? I quit caring.

Think I'll just trade it for a 2016 :). Haha.
