Electrical Ticking Under Glovebox from silver-colored unit (PICS INCLUDED) PLZ TELL ME WHAT THIS IS?

Noticed a very minor feedback from a silver unit under the glovebox dash area when the accelerator is applied. Most detectable when air and sound are off and it is quiet. Occurs when the audio is completely turned off as well. See pics in below responses of where it's coming from.

Anyone experienced and/or remedied this in 3rd gens?

 

Need more detail than this. This sounds pretty vague. I doubt it's something electrical.

 

Have narrowed it down a bit. It's not the head unit. Noise is coming from under the front passenger leg area directly under the glove box on the right side, nearly adjacent to the door speaker, but it's not from the speaker. Noise frequency is directly proportional to RPMs. Area noise is coming from has several wiring harnesses and electrical connections. Noise is not noticeable until vehicle is 'warmed up'.

 

Is it an HVAC problem? Sounds more like a vibration of something than an electrical hum.

 

It's a ticking coming from this silver electrical unit which I don't know what exactly it is. It is under the front passenger foot area under the dash/glovebox. It is warm and close to the door.

 

SO you're saying it's changes in frequency with RPM.. does it get louder when you work the engine harder and quieter when you lift of the gas? A buzz perhaps?

 

Is that the "instant" heat electric heater? Some models had an additional heating element for supplying heat before the engine actually warms up.

 

JUst checked the service manual to be sure.. that's the ECM guys. The buzzing is likely two plastic parts vibrating and in contact with each other in that area. I've had a similar buzz in that area that comes and goes since day 1. Acts pretty much as OP described it.

 

Yes, absolutely. Direct correlation to RPMs.

 

ECM is Electronic Control Module, correct? AKA the computer brains?

 

Yessir. I wouldn't mess with it personally (ie f@ck with connectors n such).

See that vinyl looking shyte wrapped around the wiring bundle? I'm almost positive I read a post where a TW member had a buzz noise fixed and the problem was something rubbing around the ECM. Try a search and see. Oh and let us know if you fix it!!!

I know exactly what the OP is talking about. The buzz is similar to an electrical arch. When the engine is on idle, the arch is about 3-4 arch a second, when you push the throttle, the speed of the arch is similar to a gas stove trying to start itself . OP do you have a pop n lock installed? Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but just inquiring. I'm going to take mine into the dealership this month and have them take a look at it along with routine maintenance .

 

Sounds like maybe radio interference. Try it with/ without the radio on.

 

The PTC heater is part of the heater core itself. That is in front of the middle of the dash:

I only listen to music via USB, so I don't think radio would play a role in it.

 

I got the same exact noise coming from that area. Not sure what that box is, but my 2nd gens had the same noise coming from the center console area. Would also like to know what the function of that box is

hey guys any updates on this? I've taken my truck to 2 dealerships now, Wondries Toyota and Longo Toyota. Both down here in socal. Both dealerships could not figure it out and just told me that it was "normal". One of the techs at longo even said it was definitely not normal and it was something electrical but the service writer told me I would have to pay for diagnostics if I wanted to get this figured out. WHY THE F*** would I pay for diagnostics on a brand new truck?! I was pretty upset about it but they couldn't help me out at all. They told me they couldn't replace the ecm because its not "broken".
