    Make sure you warm up the glue. I used a hair dryer to warm it up and dental floss to separate it. Just go slow.
    Then I rolled up the remaining glue with my thumb (like you would with bubble gum or something).
    Goo-Gone got the rest of the residue.

    Yea that does not look good, but very hard to tell when your not looking for it. Although you are the one that is looking at it the most and it annoys you then i would remove it.
    Although I am surprise by the residue coming out, from what I have experience (bought the blackout overlays in Amazon) the 3m adhesive is on the back side only and not on the sides of the letters.
    I wonder how the 3m was applied to the overlay.
