Thanks Kirk. I appreciate that. I always try to work through my mistakes rather than give up on them. Hopefully this can end well.

This experience has made me decide to change the course of my build. I will be converting my current Offroad Toy build to an Overland All-terrain build. Ideas on future mods are in my build thread (link in sig). Any ideas are very welcome.

Why did you not strip off all the good stuff, or is the adjuster just going to look at it to determine the value of your vehicle?

Just the thought of loosing all the mods on your truck, now that would be tragedy. Good luck, I'm thinking a high number is better. ; )

There's no way I'm giving up all that I've put on my truck. If they total it, which I would like to think is unlikely considering the value in the aftermarket stuff alone, I'll just do a buy-back, get another used Tacoma, and swap all the mods then part out whats left over.

I've heard the same thing. It's too hard to get an accurate value for after market stuff like that. I would've just swapped what I could back to stock before shipping it off. Hope it turns out ok though.

    +1

They take current fair market value of the model and trim package that you have, then add or deduct for mileage and condition.

Best you can hope for is a "privacy glass" upgrade from tint, "premium alloy" upgrade from rims, and AM/FM/CD/MP3 from a stereo upgrade.

Nothing else is considered. The insurance company is not going to buy your hobby.
I've had two vehicles totaled and been fucked both times.

Good or bad? Will this mean a lower buy back price?

    Depends on your insurance company...

For AAA, payout is the difference between salvage value (don't know how they arrive at that, it's probably on a table somewhere) and the number they determine for your fair market value.
They don't brand the title... they would have just left me with the vehicle and I would have had to deal with salvaging it out.
If I was not able to get their estimated salvage value, then I would have had to put in a claim for the difference.

AAA does this because so many people want to buy back on a total... they avoid dealing with it.

Other companies just pay you fair market, and buy-back is salvage value.

In your case, the body, glass, frame, wheels, etc... they're all in good shape. Your truck will pull a high salvage value, which will mean a high buy-back cost.

Don't expect to get enough on the claim to buy back this one and still be able to pick up a decent used 2nd Gen 4x4.

Call the adjuster and if he indicates that it looks like a total, arrange with him to allow you to remove the aftermarket items that you can replace with stock items if you still have them. If not, find out how much it will impact the payout if you remove everything.

OP, you need to know what's in your policy for coverage, or not, of aftermarket parts. Don't expect them to fork over any extra money that you won't fight for. As for actual coverage of aftermarket, it totally depends on your coverage. I know I have a $$$ limit on mine for aftermarket parts. I've heard others have a dollar limit, plus some wording, such as "firmly fixed to vehicle" or somesuch legalese.

Know your policy and what it covers you for, otherwise assume the f$%& me position :eek::eek:

Thanks guys, that helps. When I called them they were asking me what aftermarket stuff I put on, which if you've seen my build thread is quite the list. I asked why they wanted to know and they said it helps them estimate the value of the vehicle. It sounded like the aftermarket stuff was adding value, so hopefully that's a good thing. I'll PM BGR.
