What does the engine cover do? I'm thinking about removing it. I have a hood scoop so there's a good distance between the engine and the hood. Any thoughts?

nothing but trim. If you open up the hood scoop it can help protect it from getting dirty. Which is the only thing that really happens if you remove the hood scoop insert.

You have a non-functional hoodscoop. Leave it as is.

I've only known of one person over on XRU to turn it into a functional scoop. It's a lot of fabrication.

Not interested in moding the scoop. I did remove the engine cover tho.... wonder if it will cook the paint on the hood. It had some insulation on the bottom. Anyone cleaned their engine before?

Ok..... after driving a few days without the engine cover, here's my assessment.
I do hear a noticeable difference in the engine i.e. tapping clicking and the A/C kicking on and off. Haven't noticed any more dust on the engine. We live on a road under construction so about 75% is dirt.
I think I'll reinstall the cover. I don't care for the clacking noises!

The engine cover is there pretty much for looks other then keeping dust off of the valve cover, throttle body, and intake manifold. As for opening up the plastic insertion to enable air flow through the scoop, i would recommend not to. The body design was made for air to flow from the grill to the sides of your fenders. Wouldnt benefit from it much because our fender well is supposedly the best place that receives cold air, keeping in mind our stock intake, TRD intake, and AFE intake is enclosed and still using the fender to suck in cold air. Others say opening the scoop causes turbulence as well, not too sure on that case. If you would like to have more cold air i would recommend doing the AFE/TRD intake with the air ram mod, or just purchasing the Volant CAI.

here are some examples. i am in the process of modding my AFE stage 2 intake with the Volant air ram, similar to the second link>

I always think about removing engine covers when I buy a car but with tacomas it really does make it look like the minivan engine that it shares parts with.

I like the 1GR cover because when doing spark plugs it makes a great tool/parts tray!
