So this is my first Tacoma and very first post on the site and I’m still learning the truck. But I’m a little concerned with the loudness of the idle maybe a bad tensioner pulley or belt but the biggest thing that I’ve noticed since my purchase is the large cloud of white smoke on cold start up’s and when it’s put into reverse. I haven’t taken it back to the dealer yet and I’m not a mechanic by any means but I’ve had a blown head gasket before in a mustang. For only having 47k miles on a 2017 taco is a little nerve racking. Has anyone ever experienced this? Or could share some knowledge?

Bring it to the dealer you bought it from if you have a warranty.

The only odd behavior that's normal from these trucks is the injectors get a little loud during the cleaning cycle at idle. I hear it in the drive thru, that's it. Other than that, they are normal vehicles and what you said doesn't sound normal. If you get the run around and want verification, go test drive another tacoma and see what it's like. Or post (good) videos on here. Record it for your own records anyway, if not to show the service dept.

White smoke is moisture. It is a normal byproduct of internal combustion. At cold start up, there is a fair bit and you notice it in reverse because you are driving through it before it disperses. It happens in forward too, watch your right hand mirror as you accelerate. It will fade quickly though so it will be tougher to see in your rearview mirror.

Do you have coolant in the oil?
Do you have to add coolant?
    Does the exhaust smell odd?

I'd guess you are just burning off exhaust gas moisture

White smoke instantly on startup would concern me. Head to dealer. Like all cars once things start warming up you get steam from cooking the moisture off in the exhaust system but that takes a bit

Sorry for such a delayed response guys, caught the flu. But the only thing that seems a little off to me which I wouldn’t think would really make a big difference is the previous owner used the wrong type of coolant in the truck. *Off topic*(Has anyone ever used Evans waterless coolant?) I changed the oil and filter but during I did see an almost “milky” substance in the oil. (Thinking an additive or something) Of course the dealer said bring it in so I’m thinking that’s the best option. Glad I picked up that extra 6 year warranty. I’ll keep you all posted when I find something out.

When the head gasket leaks from the coolant jacket to the cylinder, you get coolant in oil and it makes the oil look like really expensive, foul smelling chocolate milk due to the contamination. We call it headgasket soup. Depending on the engine, that can happen, you can have the coolant leak out of the engine, you can have the cylinder to cooling jacket leak under pressure that causes coolant loss (if your coolant reservoir smells like exhaust, well there ya go) or some engine designs like my 2000 Subaru's EJ25 have an oil return pass through so it was leaking oil externally but that was it.

Disclaimer: I am not saying or suggesting you have any of that, I am NOT the guy on the forum that says "oh no, your truck is blown up!!!", I've not had hand on your truck, just explaining. Don't freak, record/document the symptoms and work with the dealer on it.

Don't suppose you have a picture? And how much of this substance was there?

Not good, that's why I asked those questions a few days ago, hopefully your dealer takes care of you. I'm not sure what magic-beans coolant you're referring to, but hopefully it doesn't cause warranty issues.

Take a sample of your oil and get it analyzed.

Every morning when I wake up in 45 degree F weather, I start up the engine, turn the defroster on and start clearing the windows. The engine is noticeably loud and white exhaust does come out of the tail pipe every time and it eventually goes away.

Does it smoke at all on a warm start up? As in drive 10 minuets, park for 5, and start it back up? Some cars build up so much condensation in the exhaust overnight that you can see the water pour out their tailpipes when you are behind them at intersections.

Hopefully your milky oil is addative and not coolant like you said.
