So I have a 17 TRD sport and I've noticed when I am going up hills or even driving at a constant speed and the RPM's are between 1-2k my engine feels like it has 0 power and is sputtering. It's super unpleasant to drive but I am guessing this is normal? I also seem to get a harsh downshift every once and a while (on average 2-3 times during my 35 mile commute). I know the engine has plenty of power because when you punch it it will get up and go. Has anyone else noticed these things?

Seems normal...I have gotten into the habit of just pressing my ECT button before I drive anymore.

    "Normal characteristic of the engine."

If you search around here many people report that its part of the fuel saving ECU Atkinson cycle. The truck is constantly trying to stay in 6th.

Make sure you have the latest firmware / software updates from the dealer, they make a significant difference. It seems they've been keeping them updated well as they've been making them, my newest one has all the latest updates from the factory (Bought beginning of August)

About 1/2 the posts on here are about the engine and no get up and go. Well not 1/2 but literally thousands of posts about the engine/ transmission not performing well together.

I must of had those updates when I bought my truck(middle august), because I can't complain at all about how my truck drives. It pretty much gets up and goes when I need/want it to. I haven't experienced any sluggishness, or weird shifting that I've been reading about.

This engine likes to be in the 3k+ RPMS if you wanna get going. It has pretty weak low end torque so once you get used to it, it's less noticeable. Like others have said, adjust your driving style and you'll be fine.

    Yes. For sure.

Motor likes to wind out unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you like to drive.

If your not in a hurry drive normally. If your in a hurry ECT or tough luck your choice!

ECT or give it more gas, either way will fix that lag.

It's normal, unfortunately. The transmission is eager to get you to the lowest RPM without regard to matching the engine's powerband. Yep, you need to get used to using sequential shifting, or if ECT works for you, cool. My solution was to sell the Tacoma and get a Duramax Colorado. Not everybody's preference, but I'm glad I made the switch.

The truck is slightly sluggish without ECT, but that’s how it was designed.
