OBDII started in 1996 I believe

Multiplex OBD or M-OBD is an OBD variant protocol used by Toyota, prior to OBD-II compliance.[13][14][15] Toyota's DLC3 (Data Link Connector 3) is the standard 16-pin OBD-II connector, but a proprietary cable and software is required as generic OBD-II cables and software will not interface with it. The bus + line is SIL (Pin 7)[16]

Ah, well my knowledge came from this:

The interior style changed drastically for the ford ranger in 1995. At that time it became obdii compliant even though it didnt actually need to until 1996.

I assumed Toyota had done the same in 1995 with the introduction of the Tacoma. I guess Toyota launched the Tacoma in 1995.5 as they were adding obdii for the 1996?

Yup I know they have been called 95.5. I agree common sense would be to just go OBDII right off for the sake of one year of course. My wife had a 96 and that was OBDII.

How were those decals? I also have to order some decals, but I'm only going to use the portion of it for the bed of the truck. Therefore, the front half will be the OEM ones, and the bed will be the ones from James. Reason being, a detailer messed up and ripped some clear coat off of my bed, so no they're going to comp me for the work to get the work done for painting the whole side of the bed they messed up on and then put on a new sticker (due to removing the original one for paint).

95.5 trucks should be obdII. 95 tacoma probably wont be listed just use 96 on the scanner.

Whenever you go to Autozone/Oreilley just tell them you have a 1996 truck. I also have a 95.5 V6 Tacoma and made the mistake once of telling the person at Autozone that it was a 95 and they naturally said it couldn't be checked. I argued that it was OBDii and could be read but this person was convinced. Sort of like when they ask you if its an LX or SR5 model when you need a oil filter...

    Good advice.

Or just buy one of these: https://www.amazon.com/BAFX-Product...id=1467216236&sr=8-2&keywords=obdii+bluetooth

    And download Torque Pro

No more autoparts store employees telling you they cannot clear the code.

Read and wipe codes at a red light. It is awesome!

The Ultragauge peaks my interest. I wonder what it can do that Torque Pro cannot do....?

Not sure, I've never tried TP as I don't own a smartphone. The UG was $50 gently used and also gives me a real time stream on engine data

It can instantly connect to your truck and its always on. The smart phone solutions are great and all, but you need to wait for it to boot, open the app, wait for it to connect over bluetooth, etc.

All well and good. But I don't see where the OP says specifically that's what he has, unless I missed that scanning his posts.

I'm glad he fixed his issue, and it was simple. Gorgeous truck.

BTW, the link I provided acknowledges the same info re 95.5, but gives instruction on how to read an OBDI system as well. Just in case.

    Sorry for trying to help.

    Carry on.
