I would say they are nice to have, but not a hard requirement at the weights you will be towing. Now: if you are towing frequently and/or at the limits, in mountains, stop and go traffic and hot climates etc, then I think it's a good thing to have and I would want to to have it. It provides a nice cushion.

That said, I have had several vehicles I towed with over the years and recall only one: Chevy Blazer/Pickups which came equipped with an external engine oil cooler as either included in the tow package or available as a separate option. They even offered tow packages tailored to the specific class you were going to tow. They were more likely to have an external power steering fluid cooler than an engine oil cooler. Also, oils are of course superior today. With high-quality synthetics, not sure they are that necessary anymore.

I believe the lines you can see on the factory engine oil cooler that is part of the oil-filter base, are carrying engine coolant. The engine oil stays "home" in the pressurized part of the oil delivery world/circuit.

Same here: My temperature gauge rises quickly to the halfway mark and never budges from that spot no matter what is going on: including running the a/c full blast, while towing, when it's in the upper 90's outside.

It's like it's fake gauge with no connection to anything except an internal secret program that moves gauge needle to some pre-set spot.
