Not sure if anyone else has had this happen, but it’s happened a few times to me since I got the truck (2019 TRD OR MT) and it recently happened this morning. It was about -15 when I started the truck to warm up for a minute before heading to work, and right on startup, a squeak sound came from the engine bay, but went away within one second of the engine running. My current theory is that it might’ve been a little bit of moisture/ice on the belt, causing it to slip for a second before catching, since yesterday afternoon, it was reasonably warm(45f) before getting down to -15f overnight with a few inches of snow. I’m not too worried about it, but I’d figure I’d see if anyone else has had this happen with their truck?

Not a 3rd gen, but anytime my 2nd get trucks began to squeak upon startup in the cold, it has been the serpentine belt beginning to get old. How many miles do you have on your '19?

Right now it’s sitting at 31,xxx. I’d be concerned if my belt is already wearing out, which is why I’m kinda thinking that it’s just some ice on the belt or something along those lines.

I wouldn't call it worn out either with those miles at only 2-3 years old. I make no claims to be a mechanic whatsoever, this is just based off of my experience. I do recall that when my father and I replaced a serpentine belt for the first time on my previous truck, I noticed it beginning to squeak on really cold mornings sooner than I would've initially expected, but it was very minor until I got closer to the timeframe where you'd roughly expect to have to do it - that's when the squeaking began to last for a little longer after startup.

the whole reason why I’m not thinking it’s a worn out belt at all. Im about 99% sure that it’s just a little condensation/ice on the belt, that makes it squeal for a second before it gets broken loose. It’s only done it on the REALLY cold mornings where it was warm the day before, so it deep froze everything overnight pretty quickly (45f down to -15/20f in only 6 hours). Definitely not the biggest issue, but I just keep it in the back of my mind.

That's how mine started to go out. On cold starts (not even winter temps cold, but summer temps cold) it would start to squeak a bit. I'd water it once a week to keep it quiet lol. Eventually I just ordered a new belt and that fixed it up. Its REALLY easy to change the belt. I am not a mechanic at all and I was able to do it in a solid 30mins.

I should also add its **relatively common ** for people to be replacing their belts on these trucks sub 50k miles. My very first squeak was around 35k, then heard it a few times up until around 45k and it was getting worse. But on the thread regarding belts, a handful of people seem to replace them around 30~50k.

Mine doesn’t squeal, but sometimes makes what almost sounds like a impact driver sound on startup when it’s really cold (-30) and below. I just attribute it to the temperature because nothing is happy when it’s that cold outside.

That’s my thinking exactly. As I’m typing this, I’m trying to get the motivation to go outside and readjust my exhaust hangers(it’s -22 and I’m lacking a pair of balls right now) nothing I have ever owned is happy when it’s cold like this

That’s crazy. That’s actually the first I’ve heard of these trucks with belts starting to go sub 50k. I’ll definitely keep an eye on it,‘and see what ends up happening as I get closer to the 50k mark

If you watch youtube videos on installing the belt, you'll see a lot of dudes with 2017s and low mileages commenting on there. I was like damn, guess I'm not alone! But yeah, if it becomes a problem, $50 for an OEM belt and easily under an hour to install it.

That’s not bad in the slightest. I’m used to belts jobs being $300 and requiring a contortionist midget, a dislocated shoulder and 5 hours

I recently replaced a idler bearing on my truck and threw a new belt on while I was at it. In my case it was super obvious what it was.

the trick to making the belt change easy is pinning the spring loaded idler open. It’s a huge help.

I don't believe I've ever heard a combustion engine not make weird noise when starting at -15.
