Anyone have any experience with engine swaps or replacements in the 2nd Gen Tacoma in California with our ridiculous smog laws?

Wondering what the referee is going to look for when determining if the truck is passable after the swap.

I've been told that the engine replacement must be current model year or newer. I need to widen my options for motors from just 2009+

Also, anyone know what is stamped on the 1gr-fe? Is the VIN and the date stamped?

    Thanks,

Just like the other guy said, you have to have all the smog equipment off the replacement engine. It has to be an engine from a vehicle with CA emissions, so no JDM engines. Engine has to be from the same class of vehicle based on GVWR.

    See Engine Changes:

    Nice link!

    Thanks.

I just talked to one guy I know that recently did a motor swap in his van and the referee did look at the VIN on the engine to confirm model year of the donor engine.
