It prompted me that there was an update and whether or not I wanted to do it.

It prompts you, similar to a cell phone and you have to accept the DL and install

Edit; Damn beat me to it OP

hopefully it fixes the different volume levels when switching between sources. that's annoying like watching tv commercials.

It's likely the source itself that is putting out different levels or "quality" of music. For example if you compare FM and Xm radio

... That's a feature. it allows me to have the volume turned down for my loud bluetooth on my phone and up for the quiet radio, without scrambling to adjust it every time I switch.

I don't know about that because it's not slightly different. It's dramatic like 10 "notches". My mom's NX200 is also an Entune system and isn't that much of a difference nor my wife's Acura and my 2015 Golf R. All using XM and FM as the benchmark.

TV commercials are louder on purpose. Most people get up and leave the room during commercials and they want you to be able to hear the advertisements which is why they are louder. The volume level for the fm/am radio in your truck has one adjustment whereas the volume limit from your device that is playing through your radio has two limits, the one on he device and the trucks radio which is why the two are usually different.

I don't think that having different volume adjustments for different sources is something that can be turned on or off.

You can't change that feature. What you CAN do is set the volume of each input to be close to each other. That way when you change sources the volume will be similar.

I never log into the entune app with my phone when in my truck so maybe that's why it never updates. No thanks, don't need it.

No one ever knows what the updates "fix"... No change log to speak of (would be nice if there was). Typically it's just something to do with one of the associated apps that no one uses.

To get a system type update, like the OP is thinking of, usually you have to get the dealer to do it via techstream, and that's if there's a update available. I had one done at my 10k service... Just asked them to check for any entune system/software updates, and there was one at the time. Don't know if any others have been released or not.

Last update I had the dealer flash was this:

    Update Version 010189
"Fixed some features for better use."
