I was looking at the entune update file for a 2018 with nav at https://securedp.toyota.com/download-app/getUpdates

Surprisingly, the latest version is from 2017. So much for the update. To update you're supposed to load it on a flash drive but I thought I would interesting to look at the contents of the file. It's ".kwi" which is a binary file that the internet tells me is typically associated with Navigation systems. Despite being binary, that are lots of plane text strings in it. It's not really that exciting.

    • There are lots of references to linux paths e.g.

    etc/enum/include/usb-class
    etc/system/config/img.conf

    • first block at the top of the file which looks like the version and part of a change log.

    • References to windows e.g. DLL (Dynamic Link Library). I'm not sure why there would be windows and linux stuff on here. Maybe they're building this with windows and some of the files slipped through.

This program cannot be run in DOS mode.

    /prog2/secondary.ifs

    • TONS of C++ library names (*.so files) and license headers
    • A ton of video codec and PCM audio stuff. You normally see this type of stuff in VLC player.

Bumping an old thread because I also noticed the interesting path references while poking through some of the sqlite databases on the SD card from my nav system.

Did you (or anyone else) learn more about this? I've searched for some threads with internal details on the head unit but haven't found anything yet. I'm not all that interested in the factory nav, as they almost all suck and I just use my phone and Android Auto but it may lend clues about other useful aspects.

I also had the entire unit apart and took a bunch of pictures of ICs and such...

I agree that factory nav does suck. Tesla is the only one I've ever seen that is good.

Im sure the head unit is hackable but I don't really know where to start on it. The only useful thing Ive found is that unplugging the xm receiver will remove the xm option from the menu.

I wouldn't mind seeing the photos.
