It doesn't matter if you have them or not. For liability reasons every single company that rebuilds seatbelts will charge you the hazardous material fee. There have been other posts in this forum where guys have gotten in pissing matches with the company because they get charged a fee that doesn't apply.... this is the first time I've seen them not mail it out but then again it's the first time I've seen some one from the islands use this service.

You're best plan of action is have it shipped to someone you know in the lower 48 and then have it forwarded to you. There's no other way around it regretfully

Thanks to all you guys for the great info! It looks like there is no explosive in 98 belt pretensioners, but Abeyancer is right - it don't matter what reality is. It seems some uninformed agency that wrote the hazmat shipping regs just lumped all pretensioners together and called them "hazardous."

However, now the rebuilder (MyAirbags.com) is saying they CAN ship to Hawaii, BUT it will cost an additional $125. I replied asking them to waive that charge and am waiting on their reply. It's just frustrating because before I ever sent the dang things in for repair I was assured by the customer service rep that they would ship to Hawaii with no extra charge. Now they aren't standing by their word.

Damn. I've heard of price gouging but 125 is highway robbery! Tell em to mail the belts to me, I've got a buddy who moved here from the islands and his wife works for Alaska Airlines. I bet they could get it to you for way less

Thanks, Abeyancer! You and the other folks on this forum are clearly good people! I have a few guys on the mainland who owe me one who I can ask to forward the package on, but I really appreciate it!

I am guessing even if you had the name of the customer service person that told you .

It would be No you are mistaken you heard wrong etc.

    Best of luck !!

This is like getting nailed for a Hazmat shipping charge for gas cylinders of welding gas you pick up yourself.

Katie at MyAirbags.com told me that my '98 belts were OK to ship because they had no explosive charge. I saw that web page Dan 77 posted, so I called them to get clarification and confirmation it did not apply to me. I don't have it in writing, but I do have an invoice with my Hawaii address on it that MyAirbags sent me before they did the work. We shall see. Thanks again!

Looks like they are located in Buford, GA: 1707 Enterprise Dr, Buford, GA 30518

Go here and ask if anyone is nearby and willing to help out by picking them up and shipping them to you:

To wrap this up - I went ahead and paid the extra $125 shipping fee to get my belts out here ASAP. The truck is my daily driver and I need it ASAP. You guys have all been great. I learned that TW has some super helpful members. I hope I can return the favor one day. I'm on Oahu if anybody needs me do do something for them out here.

For the record below is the final email from MyAiirbags.com.

Unfortunately the US Government categorizes fully functional seat belts as dangerous goods. Please understand that we do not make these rules but we do have to abide by them. In order to ship your units out we will need a lower 48 state US Address. Unfortunately it will cost $130 to ship your units to Hawaii. My sincere apologies for any inconvenience.
    Thanks

These two sentences seem to contradict each other. They need a lower 48 state address to ship them to Hawaii?

It works just fine it just never retracted by itself always needed a little help.

Yes the seat belt is a habit I still think it was Brain washing in Drivers Ed

Such a habit buckle it on to move the truck 20'

If not wearing a seat belt was the most dangerous thing I did daily life would be far to easy to me.

With it being a small "explosive charge", it's probably being moved as an ORMD which for domestic flights, isn't an issue. It's barely considered a hazmat honestly but for an ETOPS flight (long haul over water/void land) with nowhere to divert incase of an emergency, it gets the full hazmat work up. Inspections, packaging regulations etc because they have to fly about 5 hours over nothing but water.... hence 100 some odd bucks. Distance doesn't matter, only that its technically designated as an international flight.

I'd bet it wouldn't be that much more expensive to send that thing to Guam considering the bulk of the cost is that hazmat fee.
