I've had them on my last 2 vehicles and currently have one on my 2017 Tacoma... More about piece of mind. I only ever used the "extended warranty" once on my 2013 Tacoma to replace some rubber seals... other than that didn't get my moneys worth lol. I paid roughly about 1k for each warranty. I feel most of what will go wrong will go wrong under your factory warranty...extended is just piece of mind.

Agreed on piece of mind. 2k for a bumper to bumper lifetime = total piece of mind for me. Things break. $2k worth of stuff? Maybe not, but it takes any hassle out of the equation. It breaks, it gets fixed.

Can warranty be purchased after the fact? Like a couple months after purchased? Talking Toyota direct, not 3rd party...

You may change that opinion when had you bought said warranty, then something breaks which ends up costing more than the warranty would have cost you. Just like with all forms of insurance, you're gambling. Plain and simple.

You can buy an official extended Toyota warranty before your factory warranty runs out, whether via age or mileage. I believe the current rule within Toyota Corp. is that you can only purchase within your own state of residence; no more remote purchases.

I will be doing buying before my factory warranty runs out. I didn't want to pay monthly interest on my warranty cost. Plus the dealership I bought from was rather inflexible on costs of them for some reason.

yes..actually anytime within the 3 year warranty that comes with the truck. keep in mind any extended warranty starts the day the truck was sold to you, so getting a 8 year extended warranty= the 3 year that comes with the purchase plus 5 additional years total 8 years.

Well that sucks...but would they be less willing to negotiate when they know you’re factory included warranty is almost up? In other words they know they have you by the balls and know as the vehicle gets older there will likely be warranty claims?

Even if you purchased the vehicle from a dealer out of state? They can only sell it to you at time of purchase then?

I got the 7 year warranty from Toyota. When they are doing your financing thwy will ask you. Keep declining it. The price goes way down. I think mine ended up being $1,000.

I won't though. If something happens I'll have plenty of money that I didn't spend on extended warranties on all products to fix it. Odds are I'll come out on top. And if not, so be it. Sometimes you lose even when the odds are in your favor.

I agree on the comparison to insurance and gambling. In the case of extended warranties you are gambling that you will have issues which is a losing bet. Chances are far greater that you will not have issues sufficient to offset the cost of the extended warranty. This is precisely why it is available for purchase. That's also insurance 101. It's how they make money. They know that on average the premiums from everyone that never end up cashing out will more than cover the few that do. So all else aside the odds are you will not come out on top with extended warranties or insurance. Now that does ignore some things but none the less. Unexpected lump sum costs can be devastating in certain situations. So maybe the safety net is worth paying for even if you statistically are more likely to come out behind.

Edit: And just to add another thing...the above doesn't even take into consideration that warranties are a joke from the start. Toyota and the dealerships will deny anything they possibly can and the actual work from dealerships is almost always trash.

good question. i got the 8yr 75K miles, it costs a lot to fix almost anything plus on these new vehicles i am lost as for as me doing it. oil change and maybe brake pads that's it for me. what if the AC takes a dump at 6 years or a power window quits working $$$$$.

yes, you have to do it before the 3yrs or 36k miles (of in-service date of the vehicle), whichever comes first.

you can purchase out of your state, but you have to physically either sign the paperwork at the dealer you are buying from or you have to have a residence in the state you are buying from for them to mail the warranty booklet.

edit : you can get around this if you have a friend in a another state that they can mail it to and then have them forward it to you :)

its people posting names of dealers on this forum that lead to Toyota clamping down on out of state sales cause a lot of dealers were losing sales from jacked up pricing while other dealers were selling at a hefty reduced cost but at volume.

My salesperson was trying to sell me on a 5 year/100k warranty for $2500. If I had known I could’ve talked him down to around $1200 I would’ve purchased it in a heartbeat. Maybe I’ll test my luck, I’m only at 18k miles:D

I was able to get the Toyota Platinum 8yr/125k miles for $1450 at the same time I bought my 2017. I’m happy with it. It’s made negotiations for rear diff howl and a few other TSB’s much easier. I’m sure Toyota and my dealer would have eventually applied the TSB’s, but them knowing I’ll keep coming back for 8 years until they fix it seemed to make things much easier. I mentioned my issue and referenced the TSB # and they immediately ordered the parts and scheduled the work. No fuss.

Extended warranties are not always a bad deal if you keep your vehicles a long time. Well, at least as long as the warranty is good for.

For folks that change vehicles like socks, not quite is good.

Just be sure you read the fine print. Some require very specific maintenance schedules done by the dealer. (IE paying for stuff you don't need)

And don't forget to subtract your factory 3/36 warranty from whatever plan you select. The result of that math is is what you actually are paying for. That may (or may not) change your view of the value to you.

Can I buy the extended warranty from another dealer if the one I buy the car from won't budge from a high number?

I just bought the the $0 deductible Toyota Platinum 10yr/125k miles for $1750 ONLINE and OUT of STATE, for my son's 2015 Tacoma (he purchased it used) before it hit 3yrs/36K. I have already used it to pressure the scumbag dealer to fix a steering issue at 35.5K miles that otherwise would have not been repaired for free by Toyota. PM me if you want the purhase info.
