    Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has had the rear nuts (M8) for the skids come off the cross member and how they fixed that.

Its this cross member, that the rear LCA mounts are on. Both the welded nuts have broken off and my skid rattles. Pretty annoying.

I was hoping that the holes on top would line up, but they are too far inside. The holes where the bolts go threw are pretty much where the bend ends.

So far I have thought of rivnuts or cutting the cross member open and welding new bolts in.

    Thanks,
    Chris

I honestly don't know how they broke. Driver side one broke when I still had the stock skid.

Look into a rivet nut, one company that makes them is AVK fasteners. They are blind installed threaded fasteners. http://avkfasteners.com/products.php We used them at a place I worked at when we needed a threaded mounting point that we could not access on the other side like a tube. They solved many blind mounting problems. They are available in different materials, we used Monel for its corrosion resistance. I would research which one would work for your application, find a local dealer, and ask if you can buy a small quantity to use as "samples" for a project. McMaster Carr has a limited selection here https://www.mcmaster.com/nuts/rivet-nuts/system-of-measurement~metric/thread-size~m8/
Another, less strong solution, might be a Well nut

It’s not an uncommon problem, if you search skid weld nut you get plenty of results that can give you some ideas how to fix it. @Nimble9 had it happen last year so he can give you an idea what he did and how it’s held up

Third option is take it to a fabricator and have a nut flush welded in the frame. I did this myself in for one of my front frame ones that was starting to split.

But yeah it happens from overtorque spec is only like 45ft lbs IIRC.

Make sure you get a good welder experienced in 4G welding, overhead, penetration is important.

So what @Skell and I did was weld some 3/8-16 unistrut nut directly to the crossmember. This actually made my beat up IFS skid fit a lot better as well.

Outfreakinstanding. I wanted to get some rivnuts for some audio work and for some reason I didn't think of mcmaster! I'd never heard of AVK but that's a great resource too! Thanks!

It's not always from overtightening, mine sheared when I high-centered on a rock in a creek. My truck was beached on the IFS skid.

I just roll without those bolts since the backside of the IFS skid mates with the mid skid and has 4 other mount bolts forward of those two. I stuck some rubber spacers in there so it doesn't clatter on bumps.

That was how I rolled before I killed my last skid. Now I only have 3 mounting points currently cause one the 2nd one driver side is crushed in. I was talking to a local guy to weld some nuts flush.

Thanks, everyone for the ideas. I was searching for skid plate rear nut and got shit for results.
