Today, my 1996 2.4L toyota tacoma passed emission test but failed visual inspection of catalytic converter part#.
2 years ago I had to fix the truck and got a new catalytic converter, part number Airtek 612004.
The smog technician said that I need to swap out the Airtedk 612004 and replace it with the correct part which is Airtek 612006.
I searched the Air resource board database and it shows that Airtedk 612006 is used on the same tacoma but on 2.7L engine. My engine is 2.4L.

Was technicial correct to fail the smog test because my part number is designated for 2.7L engine instead of 2.4L engine?
It seems that if the part works for 2.7L engine, it should work even better for smaller engine. Why would this part not be allowed by Air Resoruce Board for 2.4L engine?

    thank you in advance.

    Welcome to TW!

It will work just fine, as shown by passing the emissions test. A single cat is often used for multiple engines by a manufacture. That is just asinine bureaucracy red tape. Let me guess... California?

    Hello there,
Are you still having this issue?
Try this link. It is an executive order by the Air resources board of CA
    Page #84, Rows 3366 and 3367
    https://ssl.arb.ca.gov/PartsSearchTool/ExecutiveOrderPDF.aspx?AEON=D-280-83
    I have uploaded it here.
As per this 612004 is the correct part # for the 1996 2.4L Tacoma.
612006 is for the 2.7L Tacoma. SO the SMOG test station clearly seems to have made a mistake in your case.

if he is referencing the below executive order - it has been rescinded or invalidated.
    https://ssl.arb.ca.gov/PartsSearchTool/ExecutiveOrderPDF.aspx?AEON=D-280-73

You may want to take a print out of the page #84 of the executive order D-280-83 and show it to the SMOG test station

If he does not agree, you can take this to the SMOG Test referee by calling 800.622.7733 and explain your issue to them.
