Honestly I'm not a huge Type O guy, but I really like their first two albums.

I was waiting for someone to mention helmet! I have their first album and love every track on it, particularly "Ironhead" and "Unsung".

I dig Primus, although not sure it is considered metal. Have you checked out Frog Brigade (not metal either)? One of Claypools other bands.

I have not. Primus is one of those bands that refuse to be labeled, however they definately have decent amount of metal songs

    Shit, I forgot Meshuggah
Early Slayer and early Anthrax when I want to listen to older stuff
On the Hard Rock side... Baroness and Mastodon.

Metal is such a huge genre , I haven't heard of a single one of those bands except Slayer and Anthrax of course

They are a little on the esoteric side. I won't lie.
Pelican, Isis, and Mouth of the Architect are all instrumental groups. No vocals. Very dynamic.
I'm a designer, metal worker, and sculptor, I turn that stuff on and it just drives creativity.

Yeah , definitely not hating at all . I'm a carpenter and usually listen to music all day at work , my ipod is a pretty ecclectic mix thats all over the map . I'll have to check them out .

Baroness is great though. I saw them as they were just starting up. Called a friend and told them to check them out, only way I could explain it was, if Motörhead gang banged the Allman Brothers this would be the sound of that demon seed.
I think it still holds as a description.

May I recommend a band called Get The Shot? Started as hardcore punk then went metal. Not sure how to post YouTube links.

    I think you'd dig Arriver.
    True thrash.
The lead singer, guitarist is a friend.
He's a finish carpenter, furniture designer and maker as well.
The last album they made was a concept album about the last naval battle of the Russo-Japanese war. Insanely heavy. Really good.

The other question, as an aside of the Primus discussion.
    How do you classify Tool?
    Very heavy, definitely not metal.
    Prog? I dunno.
I think they, as well as a few old King Crimson albums could fit in here.
