Better ground clearance than last gen, more technology and a better interior, a locking tailgate, more horsepower, and better MPGs ... I'm in. Wife is happy too. Still will be getting a 2017, just to see what the Pros have to offer.

    Good point.

I'd like to see it on the dyno and see how the hp & tq are distributed over the rpms. And let's not forget an extra cog for the auto.

I'm guessing parasitic & other losses have been reduced resulting in a net positive. I also wonder if cd, rolling & other friction losses are improved.

    It's ~17+% extra HP & ~.3% less TQ.

Yes, and the motor was designed for this Tacoma with a flat torque curve in mind. I have already heard a few of the tester say the torque comes love in the rev band and stays consistent until very high revs. Of course I would saying nice things if Toyota flew me out to WA, wined and dined me, and gave me all sorts of free shwag.

I think that is how the press/automaker relationship works. They take good care of you in hopes of getting a positive review.

All bolt ons + tuning solution. Capable of running high 13's.
Maybe is underrated and the power gains to the wheels are even higher. :crossingfinger:

So it's basically an increase of 2 mpgs; which is negligible, I was hoping for far better...

2mpg is what, 10% extra or so...more power (in V6) by 17%, more content, and surely better in a crash...

    I'm okay with it...

Maybe an after market tune will do the trick

Well, they just shouldn't have promoted it as 'improved fuel economy'; instead they should have said 'more power at the same or slightly better fuel economy'...

This is one of the biggest reasons (along with chances of age-related component failure going up over time) that I am looking to switch from 1st Gen to the '16. The way people drive in urban areas these days with horrific crashes...I want more airbags protecting me and mine.

I was excited for a drastic MPG improvement, but on par with the GM trucks ain't bad, really. Plus, RPM to RPM I guesstimate the Tacoma is a near match (within 10hp) or better for power.

I'm not really surprised that the improvements were at the given numbers as Toyota has always been conservative. However, I do wonder if the new 3.5L Atkinson engine was really necessary to achieve those mpg numbers. The current dual VVT-i 4.0L in the 4Runner has 470hp at 5,600rpm and 278ft lbs at 4,400rpm vs the 3.5's 278hp at 6k rpms and 265 ft lbs at 4,600 rpms. The 4runner weighs between 4,400-4,675 lbs and still achieves 17/22 2wd and 17/21 4x4 which was not too far off the 3.5's mpg specs. Would Toyota have been able to replicate the same 19/24 with the current dual vvt-i 1GR with the new improvements such as the 6 speed auto, aero dynamics/drag reduction? Highly likely in my opinion. Anyone else notice that the new 3rd Gen's are slightly heavier as well? (2nd Gen 4,285lbs vs 3rd Gen 4,480 at their heaviest configuration)

My 4Runner sure does feel heavy considering its 470hp but, I really do get 21mpg out of it. :)

Our 4runner feels the same but expected on an automatic with 4x4 and yes, we still get the 21+ on the hwy.
