So my 2wd Tacoma has 114k on the clock and it’s already popping out of fifth gear and grinds when it goes in unless at certain rpms. Any advice?

Have you checked the trans fluid?

Those usually aren't good signs though. Probably needs a rebuild.

I was going to replace my trans fluid today but I’m 17 and can’t afford a rebuild or a new one

I've been in that exact boat. Young, broke, and inexperienced.

Now I'm just older, slightly less broke, marginally more experienced.

Adjust your driving habits and don't use 5th gear. It's technically just an OverDrive, 4th is still 1:1 gear ratio and will get you around just fine. Then save up your pennies for used W59 (the style of 5speed transmissions that are in our trucks) from a junkyard and swap it in when you're able

Yeah. I learned that coming back down the coast when I started learning how to drive stick. It’s disappointing the trans shit on me with only 114k on it. 5th works at certain rpm ranges and speeds. When I’m doing 70 on the highway it’s fine but when I’m in like 40-60 it’ll pop right out and bring itself so should I completely give up on it and have 2 neutrals or use it when it wants to work

Seriously, you may have a bushing problem. If so, it's an easy fix. There is a bushing that the gear shift lever sets on. When it wears out, it makes it hard to find gears.

You might try double clutching when you go into 5th. If it goes in easy that that way, it might be worn synchronizers. Not terminal, but annoying.

It also may be a clutch adjustment issue.

Update. I just ordered a shifter bushing and seat from marlin crawler. If that fixes it I’ll be really happy. If not I’ll be very pissed off and the ol lady won’t be getting Christmas presents

New to you used transmission shouldn’t cost more than $250 if you hunt around - best to do what you’re doing and begin with basic possible fixes

Easy there. I’ve never had a problem until recently. It’s not my shifting. No I’ve only put 17k on the truck. Doing bushings first. If it’s still a problem then I’ll open up the box

That’s what I was thinking. I’m doing the easy fix first and if that isn’t it I’ll open it up or find a junkyard deal

manual boxes are an ez read

someone else put 100k miles on it b4 U

same issues other gears would would indicate other circumstances

    the bushing might work

    4 U i hope it does

poppin out & grindin in 5th = sloppy shifting

direct drive is easiest gear to get into

does it make a loud noise when it comes out o gear

or does it just slip out

Okay I understand why you would say that now but it doesn’t grind going in any other gear. Lol I figured out how to shift awhile ago. I’ll have clutch all the way pressed in and it’ll grind into fifth and as soon as I let off the gas it just kind of falls out. No noise or anything. Just one second I’m in gear and the next I’m at 4K rpms in neutral
