    I thought 1st gen was 95-97, 2nd gen 98-00, 3rd gen 01-04, because of body style changes like 4runners? just wondering......

I believe for right now he's just setting it up like this because they used the same engine and he might get around to changing it later on...the 05 was the first major change

Yeah, there are different ways of categorizing the various 'eras' - both Tacomas specifically and Toyota trucks generally ... If you're talking Tacomas only (no PreTaco or Hilux), I'd say the 4-way breakdown (95.5-97; 98-00; 01-04; 05+) is probably the most useful way to classify 'em ...

It's sometimes hard to classify where the "generations" start/stop. Honestly, I agree with his classification of 1st gen as 1995.5-2004. Although they did do some minor styling changes, there's nothing so extreme to call it a next generation. But if it had been setup another way, I wouldn't argue much against, either.

Frame and powertrain are identical throughout the years, iirc.

Usually it takes a "major" change to cause a new generation. Obviously the 2005+ trucks qualify, as a complete re-design. Another non-yota example would be the Ford Super Duty Trucks, by going to a coil-spring suspension in the front, from the leaf-spring... Big enough change to warrant distinction, imo.

As a good example, all Tundras are grouped in the same "gen" until the 2007 is released. even though they changed the front-end styling in 2003, and then even updated the engine and used a new tranny in 2005.
