I needed some thoughts on when the first oil change should be done. The owners manual says 5k. I know the importance of additives for break in period, but I've also read how manufacturers use as a marketing stategy longer intervals between oil changes claiming less expensive to maintain a vehicle in order to get more sales. I'm a little old school in that I've always done the oil change at 3k. Some thoughts on what everyone else thinks please. Thanks

I'm at 2k and I'm changing now to synthetic Mobil 1 I think. I was told 2k then 3k then every 5k with synthetic but I'll change every 3k with the cold weather short driving distances I do. I was told first 2k by a volkswagen mechanic due to metal shavings coming off new engine parts.? Any thoughts?

any break in will have SOME metal shavings.....but they will be minimal. running a synthetic....you can run the change intervals longer. best thing to do is have an oil analysis done....that'll tell you/give you an idea how you should run your oil changes.

I did the first at 3K (actually 3845 miles to be exact), and then go for 5K after that.

    secret stuff.
I let Toyota do the freebie oil change at 2500K and got a bonus of an oil stain on the back seat, and oil covering the entire backside of my skid plate. Needless to say, those asshats will not see me unless it's for a TSB...

Thanks everyone for there thoughts and opinions. I have 3200 on truck now and will do the oil change myself. I will use M1 0w-30 like I use on the rest of my vehicles. I dont really trust dealerships for changing oil for they are kinda messy and charge WAY TOO much for a simple oil change.

I changed my 2010 at 3K. The oil was still clear but after draining i noticed an unusual yellow stain on my hands. I assume this is some kind of additive put in for the break-in. That made me remember when I bought my JD tractor. The owners manual specifically stated not to replace the "break-in oil" until a specified amount of time had been put on the engine. That oil also look different. Now I wonder if I changed the tacoma oil to soon.
