First oil change look what I found in oil

So did the first oil change myself. I do my oil changes on all my vehicles. What I found in this one was no different from most of my other vehicles. When I went to the dealer to buy the oil filters they called me crazy and said Toyota runs all the engines, but I wanted to change the oil anyway. I have owned lots of cars, and the only car that had nothing in the oil was the Mustang GT500. Probably because its a hand built motor and I hear they do run them then change the oil. The oil pan was clean and dry before the oil change. Dealer would never show you this and its the reason I do an oil change early. In this case at 1400kms or about 870miles. Normally I do the first one at 500, but I was late with this one. Here are the pics, see for yourself. Zoom in and you can see the metal particles.

There will probably be more on the next change also. I feel like that's a part of the engine breaking in. I generally do a first oil change (by myself, also) at around 3k miles. For the same reason, I know the oil gets dirtier faster when the engine is young. 800 miles sounds really early to me lol. But definitely doesn't hurt to get it done now and again at 5-6k miles.

Sounds like all the more reason to Let Toyota do the first few oil changes. They warranty the thing, and it would seemingly be in their best interest to address this.

Its actually quite normal, some of the cars that I have owned that looked just like this:
    2010 Honda Ridgeline 3.5L
    2012 Camaro SS 6.2LV8
    2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4.0L
    2013 Camaro ZL1 6.2L supercharged

These cars I bought new so I did the first oil change and they looked the same as the new Tacoma. I think its normal, but i would not want this stuff floating around until the first scheduled oil change.

If you take your vehicle in for its change, the oil will get drained into a pan with other oil and you will never see it. I had to drain the oil into a clean pan, then pour it into a recycling bin and what you see was left on the bottom of the pan.

Do you think for a second Toyota would actually tell you? The engine doesn't knock and runs great. To the uninformed that go to the dealer, they would never know.

I was a former mechanic and for oil changes you drag the dirty oil drain bin over. The oil you drain gets mixed with oil from other cars then pumped out for recycling. The mechanic never really sees the oil other than the stream coming out of the car when its draining. The only way to catch it is to use a clean drain pan and look in the light, without looking in the light you would probably miss it. The flash on the camera picks it up well.

Like I said in first post, the only vehicle that I know never had anything was my GT500. Every other new vehicle I bought looked like that. Its normal, but I think its why you should do the first oil change early. It also proves that the filter does not get everything.

Changed mine at 2000 and again at 6000. I did the oil and filter change at 2000 myself. Didn't see anything like the Op did. Dealer did my 5000 mile scheduled change so who knows what was in that used oil. Or new oil they put in. I needed the tires rotated because of a 1000 mile trip coming up and just didn't have time to do the rotation myself. Soooo, I let them change the oil to. Checked tires and oil then hit the interstate for the 60 miles home. No problems.

Thats the thing I was trying to say, addicus24 you would have had the same stuff in your oil. When you changed your oil, the only way to see it is to use a clean drain pan, and drain the oil out of the pan so you have a thin film left and look in the light. If you drained it into a pan and then just dumped it you would have never noticed. You can't see it in the pan until you drain the pan and look on the bottom. Kind of like panning for gold. If you don't look closely or if the light is not bright you will probably never notice it.

So what do you think it is, 2016Taco? Now I regret not sending my first oil change in to Blackstone for analysis. It's shit like this that always makes me change my oil myself at about the first 2000 miles. Now, the next question is; should we be changing our other fluids at the halfway point?

I too have always changed my own oil, never seen anything like that. Where's that engine made, Mexico? That's not normal for any engine. All of that should have been blown out before assembly.
Hard to imagine how that got in your oil pan. Might explain the engine problems some folks have.

I also do the early oil change, and from what I see everything looks normal. That's just good preventive maintenance .

Filter doesn't catch everything, just look at my oil......

Its just wear from the engine. I really don't think its a big deal and to be honest, 99% of people would never know unless you looked for it. How many people actually do their own oil changes???? Dealers don't take the time to look for this stuff. If it was sent to Blackstone they would tell you what it was. I know for my GT500 there was nothing (5.8L hand built) and other Mustang owners (5.0L mass produced) had the same looking stuff and it came back as aluminum and other bearing material. They said not to worry on a new engine, however, if you still get it after a few oil changes then there is something wrong.

Its NORMAL and impossible to blow it out unless you run the engine and drain the oil as most of those particles are wear particles (your engine breaking in). You should have seen my GSXR750, the first oil change had bigger pieces, second was very fine glitter, and third had nothing. If you want to see a crazy amount of steel drain your rear diff at 1 or 2K miles. My FJ had a ton of crap in in at about 1500miles, or just leave it like most people and those bigger pieces will get ground into very fine particles. I just like to get it out.

The purpose of my post was not to scare people, but just to let you know its important to change your oil well before the first recommended oil change. If you don't your engine will probably be fine, most of the stuff will probably just seat itself in the bearings or get ground up by moving parts. In the grand scheme of things I don't know if it changes things, I'm just anal with my vehicles.

Yep It is normal don't worry at all about it. One other thing when all parts get broken in fairly good you should notice better gas mileage , smoother running engine and overall smoother transmission shifts. Enjoy your new trucks!!
