    It's not really what you would save, but what you wouldn't waste. Even 5K is too soon for most applications with synthetic oil. I've rebuilt plenty of motors from the 70s and I can tell you todays motor and oil are not the same as they were then. Changing every 3K is just wasted effort that won't do anything that every 5-7.5K wouldn't.

    I'm switching to Pennzoil platinum today.... I'm scared

    Edit: I'm at 67k miles and have run Mobil 1 full syn from day one. Did some internet surfing and from everything I read Mobil 1 is kinda middle of the road of the top oil brands. Amsoil topped out most of the time, but like @jboudreaux1965 said, Pennzoil Platinum was usually the closest second.
