I incorrectly wrote that. It should be 23. The truck came with these OEM chrome rims that were changed to the 3rd gen TRD ones - that improved response and mpg is more consistently at 23 instead of 22. I only have RWD & auto, and I never go above 65 as I don't feel comfortable going faster (I'll drive triple digits all day in my Celica). I didn't notice any improvement using higher octane, so I stick with the "regular" from Costco. Truck is always empty - nothing inside, in the bed, or on top ever. Past years the truck was typically on "road" tires rather than the typical all terrain options. And I'm guilty of mild over-inflation. 90% HWY driving. I did not see a benefit of using K&N filter over OEM regarding mileage.

I'm able to hit similar fuel numbers, same basic setup as you have. I did recently add the AFE dry drop in but that's more for the longevity versus fuel economy, though I doubt it will hurt those numbers.

Just did mine at 58k. Looked about the same. Will probably change again at 100k. Got the plugs from the dealer for about $30.

A good set of 3/8 extensions and a new magnetic socket made it easier. The extensions allow you to remove less shit on the drivers side. You’re good to go.

Don’t feel bad, I’m in the same boat, installed iridiums they’re running just fine, but my OCD wants to install the Densos I picked up from the dealer at $2.88 a piece...I’m my own worst enemy!

FWIW, I'm on the original OEM plugs at 175k. I've had my #6 coil pack go up twice, but other than that, no issues or noticeable change in performance to warrant changing (knock on wood)

The 30K plug change is for emissions standards at 30 K they will still look new. Highly recommend anti seize on the threads.

I paid $35 with shipping for the NGKs (RockAuto). I know the argument and validity that new plugs have limited to zero effect with low mileage but I swear when the trucks is much smoother going 10-60mph now. Although I did clean the MAF at the same time so that's probably it.

It's a family vehicle that was only driven on Sundays for the first few years. After that it was used 3x week going back and forth to work (20mi). Given the only problem was crappy OEM chrome rims (replaced with 3rd gen rims) - this vehicle will be in the family for years to come. Absolute solid machine.

I'm content with iridiums at this point. I use it on my Celica for the past 18yrs with zero issues (but i change them out every 10-20k).

I have to ask - out of curiosity - if going to the trouble to check on them and replace coil packs - why not put in new plugs? I understand money doesn't grow on trees and environmental reasons but ~$30 for piece of mind?

Ah, good to know! thanks for the input!. I did use anti-seize on the threads :) I don't think the factory did because they did not want to come out.

Doesn't matter about MPG, it's running smoother I'm sure. I know mine did a little bit. Plus I've had cars not start when the plugs got bad enough, which is a suckbag of a situation..

I did use a dab of anti-seize as well. Was a little nervous pulling the old ones as I've never had a vehicle that needed them so infrequently but all 4 came out first try.

Red McCombs and all of the other SA Toyota dealerships have half-baked service depts. All you have to do is look in your warrant/service guides. Once again - the 4 cyl gets new plus at 100K; the 6 cyl at 30K.

    Here ya go.

I did inspect the plug, to see if it would have somehow caused an issue with the coil pack. Visually, it was fine. I didn't bother checking the others since the check engine light and code identified the specific coil pack failure. I have a set of fresh plugs to go in at some point. Maybe at 200k.

Plugs, now that they aren't dependent on points, and with new tech and materials will go 100K easily in every application I am aware of. I don't change plugs unless there is a problem and have gone almost 200K on a set.

I broke the bottom bolt off on the “bracket” on the drivers side. Now it runs just fine without that bracket.

New guy here. I just changed the plugs in my 2012 Tacoma a couple of days ago. Before I got started changing the plugs I was on the NGK website where they say that their plugs have a coating of some sort on them and that anti seize should not be put on the plugs because it will alter the torque specs for said plugs.
