I just did my truck as well, used 2.5 cans, seems to coat pretty well. The cans were pretty cheap at about 8 bucks each, and took about 2-3 hours in the yard to do. It smells funky, but not bad. So far, seems to coat really well. The winter wax of collinite super double coat is on, so ready to rock for the upcoming weather.

I noticed today after driving, little bits of pine needles have stuck to the fluid film. Kinda icky looking, may remove and reapply ff. Wasnt expecting anything but a little dust to stick, not stupid pine needles.

Ahh, that sounds messy but I'd imagine a quick hit with a hose should knock that off. The only coating that would not attract anything is the tar rubberized and I heard bad things about that trapping moisture. What I do like about ff is that you can spray it on the springs and shocks too, you can do that with the hard coatings.

I bought a case of FF and used around 5 cans last Winter.

For this Winter I was thinking about taking it in, but the only local place who does FF applications charges $450 and needs the vehicle for an entire day.

I think I can do a decent enough job myself...

Wow that's a lot. I paid $190 and I plan on only doing that every few years and use the rattle cans in between

That is a lot. I bought the whole application kit on Amazon. It was about $140 and came with a gallon of FF, a spray can for touching up, the pneumatic sprayer, extension wands, etc. I did it in my driveway a few days ago and it took about an hour. I'm sure it would be easier with a lift, but these trucks sit high enough off of the ground that it's not too bad to do from underneath. It wasn't messy at all. No drips or overspray.

After doing it once myself, I don't see much of a reason to take it to somebody else to do. It's just not that hard.

I used some paper towels and got most of the needles off, then resprayed with ff. I just don't want it looking like crap all winter, don't mind light dirt coat, but big chunks of pine needles looks horrible! I sprayed the shocks and springs, and everything has a nice wet look. I wish there was a place to take and get it done right the first time since I don't have a lift or anything to raise the truck up, but nothing anywhere even close. But I got it the best I could, and I feel like it is well ready for winter weather.

Did you need a compressor? If so how big does it need to be?

Yes, you have to have a compressor but not a big one. My 6 gallon pancake compressor didn't have a hard time keeping up at all.

It only takes 1/2 to 1/3 of a gallon to coat everything so once you have the hardware each subsequent application is pretty cheap.

Even if you don't get the FF kit, think about grabbing a compressor. Even a cheap Craigslist or Harbor Freight one is better than nothing. It's a tool that I put off buying for way too long. Once I got it, I realized that it so many uses. One of my favorites is cleaning guns. Apply some solvent, count to 10, and then hit it with 120psi of compressed air and every piece of dirt and carbon just goes away.

The guy that did mine used 2 gallons. It's on sale right now at my local auto parts store for $30 a gallon.

If it took him 2 gallons for your truck, he was doing it wrong. Most likely, he charged you for two gallons but used much, much less.

How difficult is it to detect a fluid leak with fluid film applied?
How difficult is it to remove in case I have to touch up rust?

You can also use an electric paint sprayer if you don't have a big compressor. Mickeyman, sounds like you got double billed. I easily did my truck and my wife's runner with a gallon can and have almost enough for a 3rd vehicle. Splitbolt, it would be had to notice an oil leak. The point of this stuff though is so you don't have to touch up any rust. On my old truck I was getting the normal Toyota rust in the pinch seam on bottom of the door. I sprayed FF in there and for the next few years every time my truck got really dirty it would creep up the door on the dirt.

This is after three weeks of living on a dirt road in Vermont, the product is corrosion free. The truck has 3000 miles

Just did my truck, 3 cans and the trigger sprayer, took me about an hour. Jacked the rear up, removed the spare tire and just sprayed everything.
