Just as the title states need to call in a favour and help diagnose a sound.

TLDR; new bearings and generator in, still persistent.

Long version: Last year on the trail I hulk smashed through a giant puddle and the vehicle quit on me. Started it up after two attempts with it cranking and drove out.

After I got it out I checked the filter for water permiation and cleared some error codes with a friends reader

    40269686_2001735569877950_3425269854880399360_n.jpg

Since then there has been a persistent whine that I thought I could fix as hard while driving.

Fast forward to a few months ago and I was sick of hearing it. And decided I would take a crack at replacing some possible suspects/preventative maintenance.

I have replaced: idle bearings (all three), belt, alternator, and yet I still have this noise.

This was taken today after the start up from putting a refurbished alternator in

@tacoma16 and @Atlas86 have been trying to help me figure it out without success but other suspects maybe fan clutch or ac pulley. Anyone got any ideas?

    EDIT:

looks like belt tension bearing went caput. Update again once it gets swapped out.

That sure sounds like power steering pump to me. Change the fluid after splashdown?

Does it change pitch at all when you turn the wheel? It sounds sort of like a power steering whine.

negative. Didn't even think it could be possible. I thought maybe water pump? or very worst timing business lol

Not that i can recall. Could there be water in the system somehow?

There could be. With the truck at idle try turning the wheel to the left and right. If the sound changes the pump is not functioning correctly. Could do a fluid swap on it, or just replace the pump (and still do a fluid swap).

I'm not mechanically inclined. But I think these guys are right. That does sound like every power steering pump I've ever heard. LOL

Definitely sounds like a steering issue to me. I drove a fox mustang for years and they are notorious for these same noises. I would try a thorough examination of that system.

I didn't hear any difference even when you went to full lock. Normally when a power steering pump is failing (or low of fluid) it's louder then.

Edit: I'd still suggest flushing the system. It can be done in about 30 minutes for under $20. Can't hurt to rule out water in the fluid.

sounds like the bottom right but without a stethoscope it's been hard to pin point

Its directly proportionate with the idle and RPM on he truck. Which is why I don't think it would be steering

yea, it COULD be anything up there. YOU'RE going to have to pinpoint it.

Start by taking off a belt at a time and seeing which driven sets of bearings are affected.

And yes. That crossing could have driven water into everything. I'd be changing (or at least checking) diff. fluids/trans. fluids for water.

    Water tears up bearings.

Oh no doubt. I just replaced all idler bearings and slapped on a new belt. Wondering if it's worth it to take to the stealership to have it inspected.. I guess that's why I'm here first

The alternator was just replaced on Saturday so I'm wondering how the AC compressor could be relating to the idle / rpms

They're just going to do what you are doing.

So the noise is gone with no belt (s)? *I have 2, didn't know 2nd Gens went to a serpintine.

edit:BTW, my money is still in pwr. steering.
