am not presently a tacoma owner(have owned 4 previously) and am considering buying another to tow behind our motorhome. Question is - can a 4wd be flat towed without any modifications? Also, does anyone out there have any experience with a drive-shaft disconnect device that is presently on the market?? Any comments would helpful (well almost any)

Cannot flat tow (dinghy) without disconnect or getting dirty under the truck for 10 min.

    Unless its a manual.

Get a trailer, flat towing is dumb.

I don't know of any disconnects, but it's only a few bolts holding it to the rear axle. It'd be easy to just undo the rear and tie it up out of the way.

You can flat tow a manual trans but not an automatic. Just remove the rear drive shaft if it's an automatic at the support bearing you can still drive it around in 4WD if you need to move it. If the front wheels are on the ground be sure to take it out of 4WD before you tow it. I have never tried it but I'm thinking once it's turned off it reverts to 2WD any way.
