Even Hi-lift doesn't claim it is in any way "better" than a winch, so as @DoorDing said, only a masochist would opt for a hi-lift when an actual winch is available. However, they can be really useful when used in conjunction with a winch for steadying the vehicle and keeping it form rolling, etc...

It's a fairly universal tool and can be used for a lot of different things, and if your winch takes a dump on you, it wouldn't hurt to keep the hi-lift as a backup, either.

Ok so don't yell at me too much. But one time my front axle nut on my dodge cummins was too tight...so I put the 3/4 breaker bar on the socket, and then put the hi lift under it and went to jacking. I knew it was gonna go so I put on my flight helmet lol.. Man when that nut broke loose that jack left my yard at a very high rate of speed, it landed in the neighbors yard who was a cop and missed his patrol car by about 2 feet.... no one was home and so I ran over and got it lol.

Damn, not even on the trail haha. I don't use my hilift at home unless I'm doing ghetto body work.

I have had the pump seals fail too many times on bottle jacks and floor jacks to justify vehicle carry.

Right now I prefer a scissor jack with a nut attached (optional, welded on), and operated with a 1/2in Dewalt battery impact wrench.
