Here is good info on transfer case fluid. I went with the expensive Toyota transfer case fluid at 51 K miles.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I understand doing more frequent oil changes (like every 5K miles) if you’re working the truck hard with towing, hauling etc. but I can’t stand the people who think the 10K mile oil changes are a conspiracy to make the trucks break down.

Many people dont know how big corporations work. Its the bean counters that make the final decisions NOT the engineers.

There are other factors involved as pressure from the gov, competition between competitors, etc.

First oil change 1000 (just because you do not see metal break-in particles does not mean they are not there) there after every 5000.

Towing or heavy use and hot conditions 3000.

I don't know... judging by some of the mods we do here that's exactly what we're doing.

I have 3 Toyota vehicles in my household, so I do like Toyotas. That being said, I hope the 10,000 mile oil change engineer was not the one that help design the third brake light seal, coolant crossover pipe and timing cover (if I left out any more engineering issues, please post below).

All the other fluids I think are definitely overkill. But personally I followed the owners manual to a T as far as the engine break in procedure and then around 3k miles changed the oil. It’s your truck tho, do what makes you comfortable.

OP if you read the threads on this forum about this very thing you'll see the following (in general):
    - 5-10K mile break-in diff oil change. Most notice the oil is black, nasty, and a fair amount of gunk on the magnet
    - Break-in engine oil change (~1K miles). Most notice metal bits in the pleats of the oil filter
    - Transfer case. Most notice the oil is clean and didn't really think the break-in change was needed
    - Transmission. Most notice the oil/fluid is clean and didn't really think the break-in change was needed

Why not? Engine oil and diff fluids are cheaper than fueling up 1 single tank.

    None
Toyotacare 1st service for an oil change is 5k miles. The rest of the stuff on the list is totally unwarranted.

I did my diff later than the manual stated, at 40k. :anonymous::anonymous:

It still had a golden color to it. Not new, but not amber either.

The trans isn't going to be messed with until 60k. And my truck is either commuting less than 10 miles or it's towing. Worst kind of service duty.

I did my diffs at 15:k and I will say the front was dark and the rear did have some metal. I did the transfer case at 25 k all amsoil . Will it be a good thing down the rode . Who knows but it can’t hurt . Oil change I always do at 5 K / cheap enough and gives me peace of mind.
