Broken and scratched tailgate, cracked rear tail light lens, coffee stain in driver seat.
It's been a long time but there is a thread where the guy put them in, same thing you are thinking about, he cut out the holes and mounted and ran the wiring, I can't think of the name of the member, you would have to do a search, as I remember I thought he said it was pretty easy, after he was done it looked factory.

Whatever you do - don't get 5" lights. I was given some for Christmas, and they do not fit. If you go with aftermarket lights, get the 4" or 4.5" lights.

I got my first 4x4 in 1972...haven't been without one! I still like Chrome!
I bought my lights on ebay, they are exact replacements for the origional. I got the wiring connectors at a junk yard and made the wiring harness my self out of 14ga wire.
Check "gsm's" sticky on the 2nd gen site, I used it and it works great.
I use my lights as daytime running lights with no other lights on.
I bought the factory switch from toyota of dallas, there is a link to their web site in the sticky.
    good luck
