Jeff (and others)... I would love to go 4 wheeling anywhere... and it would be fun.

What doesn't seem most of the repliers here understand is that I am not saying (or ever said) my factory provided 4WD system is 'better than' Jeff's aftermarket add ons, for traction or ability.

I only want those who have not yet owned an '09+ Off Road 4WD to know that they don't have to sink more money into an already expensive truck to make it more trail ready. That even with the negative part of A-TRAC making noise or feeling rough to some, it still will drive any tire with traction (matching tire rotation) which is how lockers provide 100% drive to both tires... matching rotation. They just do it differently.

The advantage of A-TRAC over lockers is that steering isn't effected, and it doesn't have to be shut off to free up steering on tight trails. So, the best description I can think of is to call it 'automatic lockers'... like limited slip... only works when one tire per axle tries to spin faster than the other.

The biggest advantage of A-TRAC is it is included, and not an add on... and it works! If not A-TRAC equipped, I would be happy with just the rear locker that the Off Road also still has or add a front locker if needed for what I want to do. Having the A-TRAC has saved me from needing a pull, at least once, however!

If can easily say I am not down on lockers (I am not)... BUT, can you ever say that you are not down on Toyota's A-TRAC... and again, I think a quality answer to that can only come after wheeling a few times with A-TRAC... to know it is to love it!

You keep stating that having to turn off a locker is a disadvantage, but its a littel switch/cable that you have to move. Most people are more than capable of doing so with minimal effort. And as many have said, turning isnt severly restricted when locked front/rear.

Oh hell yeah, but only if it was the Timmy on roids when he was training for spec olympics.

Now back on subject guys. Dave should totally put an 8 track player in his ATRAC.

David you have a ton of respect from many readers who've taken the time not only to read your informative threads but looking at your cool trip pics as well. Quit wasting your time with replies. We all see your points and their validity, these guys are just yanking your chain.

But we do totally need to set up a showdown to see which
machine performs best in certain situations, and maybe to see comparisons to stockish sports as well. We'd have to do road tests also to see how driveability compares. That way you and Larry could have a chance to kiss and make up or do some bitch slapping or sumptin like that....

Agreed , you guys gotta lighten up on the old fart. Dave's a good guy (Just don't mention A-Trac around him...:eek::Dj/k)

And David, you need to think before typing & ponder how what you're saying is going to be taken by the masses......;):)

Im not bashing the guy, but when he makes comments like "The only reason someone would buy the SPort, is because they were not propperly informed....", etc. I think thats BS. Some people LIKE the sports. Props to folks for buying what they want.

Yah, it is like these guys can't read...?! Lockers aren't bad... I have rear lockers. Paying more for a front locker just isn't mandatory anymore for serious wheeling... Thank you Toyota! Thanks Airun...

    1) A-TRAC and Lockers will both get you anywhere it is possible to go with our trucks.

    2) A-TRAC is automatic and lockers are manual... I never said flipping a locker switch was a 'disadvantage'... what I did say is A-TRAC doesn't need to be turned on and off while you are in L4.... you can just leave it on and it only works when needed to stop a spin.

    3) A-TRAC is a Toyota standard equipment item.

    4) There are videos of A-TRAC Toyotas climbing boulders that only front/ rear locked rigs could climb before... So, one isn't 'better' in as much as it being able to get you somewhere. They just work different... and one costs nothing while the other requires $1,000's more added to the cost of your truck.

But on the otherhand if a guy starts with negative then ya pretty much can expect neg. comments back.. I dunno, maybe its just me :notsure:

How many KOH race vehicles ran electronic traction control?

    How many ran lockers?

To me, that holds the answer. $200,000+ race vehicles that do not compromise on anything, and they choose lockers over electronic traction control. If electronic traction control was better than lockers, they'd be running it.

I think we, as in you and I, have put it to fucking rest. The rest of the world still appears hung up on it.

Last time I checked, you and I just wheel together :notsure: Why everyone else can't get on that boat, I'm not sure.

For everyone else, FWIW, Larry and I have pretty much arrived at the conclusion that the systems are different, they both help, and which one is "better" doesn't matter when you have rocks you can stack, winches, come-alongs, and whatever else.

Go out and have fun and let the kids argue this shit. See you on the trails if you're not too busy typing in this thread.
