Usually cold air intakes should be taking in "cold air" from outside or have some kind of box to keep hot air separated from intake.

Shok Industries 2/0 big 4 upgrade and sound deadener.
And the companies also claim X HP, Y Torque Gains!!! while the little writing on the bottom says, "Results not normal". Compare your previous vehicle intakes to the one on your Tacoma. If you're already drawing air from outside of the engine bay you're drawing cold or cooler air rather than the hot air trapped in the engine bay and that's more or less the theory. No need for a fancy box or foam filter.

As an aside, be aware of any sensors downstream of the air filter if you switch to an oiled filter like a K&N as they can cause performance issues if over oiled and that oil coats the electronics. Furthermore seeing any gains with those kinds of filters is because they aren't filtering to as small of a micron level as a paper filter would. As long as you're okay with potential engine damage, as unlikely as it probably is, then go for it.
